Golf: Dumont de Chassart named semifinalist for Hogan Award

HOGAN AWARD RELEASE

FORT WORTH, Texas –
Fighting Illini fifth-year senior golfer Adrien Dumont de Chassart has been named 1 of 10 semifinalists for the 2023 Ben Hogan Award, as announced Monday (April 17) by the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation, the Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Dumont de Chassart, the reigning two-time Big Ten Player of the Year, has continued his stellar play into the 2022-23 season, ranking sixth nationally in the latest Golfstat NCAA player rankings released April 16, and No. 5 in the most-recent PGA Tour University rankings as of April 12. He leads the team with a stroke average of 69.7, on pace to break his own single-season school record of 70.08 set last season.

A native of Villers la Ville, Belgium, Dumont de Chassart has remained a model of consistency in the lineup for the No. 3 ranked Fighting Illini, closing seven of nine tournaments on the season as the team's No. 1 or No. 2 finisher. Through 27 rounds, he has recorded 21 (77.8%) at par or better with a team-leading 18 (66.7%) rounds under par.

Dumont de Chassart, who owns three victories in his collegiate career, has added three more runner-up finishes in 2022-23 alone, including in the Illini's season-opener at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational in September, and in the team's two most-recent outings earlier this month at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational and the Tiger Collegiate Invitational. Overall, he has posted four top 5s and finished outside of the top 15 just once through nine tournaments, a tie for 16th at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, entering the team's regular-season finale this weekend at Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate, hosted this Saturday and Sunday at the Atkins Golf Club at the University of Illinois.

The Ben Hogan Award presented by PNC Bank annually awards the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer based on all collegiate, amateur and professional events over the previous 12 months. The Ben Hogan Award Selection Committee, which votes during each stage of the process, is comprised of 30 leaders in collegiate, amateur and professional golf.

On Thursday, May 4, the 10 semifinalists will be pared down to three finalists. The finalists will attend a black-tie dinner Monday, May 22, at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, where the winner will be crowned. The winner will receive an exemption into the PGA TOUR's 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, played annually at Colonial.

Extremely positive feedback on the draft

I've had some time on my hands lately and watched things I would never normally watch. One of the things I found was Chris Simms podcasts on the draft. Most podcasts are a huge waste of time but these were interesting.

Cornerbacks: Go 14 minutes in to hear about Devon Witherspoon.

Safeties: Go 1 hour and 2 minutes in to hear about Quan Martin and Sydney Brown.

Running Backs: Go 1 hour and 7 minutes in to hear about Chase Brown.

Quick update…

We’re on commit watch for Oregon transfer Quincy Guerrier.

I believe both TJ Shannon and Coleman Hawkins want to go pro. Illinois has shifted gears a bit preparing for that.

They both want to do the smart thing but are also willing to bet on themselves.

NIL figures into the processes. The collective can offer a pretty good package.

Gurrier is similar to Hawkins. Better scorer but not as good of rebounder or passer.

You don’t want Guerrier falling in love with the 3 like he did at Oregon and like Matthew Mayer did here.

It’s a waiting game for RayJ Dennis. He’s unlikely to be drafted. If he comes back to college most believe he will transfer.

Illinois is on top of that situation as are several other high major programs.
