kinda OT last night at Big Ten softball tournament

Don't know who else might have seen our tourney game with Wisconsin, a fantastic crowd excitement. One of the very best things I have attended in last couple years. This is fastpitch softball country I think they would get a lot of crowds like that if we could improve the program. Need some NIL funds for a top pitcher and big stick in the middle of the lineup. Season has not been good but last night was great.

Baseball: Illini crush six home runs to complete sweep of Michigan State

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Fighting Illini baseball (22-22, 11-10) crushed a season-high six home runs en route to a 10-3 victory over Michigan State (28-16, 10-8), completing the series sweep on Sunday at Illinois Field.

It was Michigan State that would get on the board first in this one, pushing a run across in the first to start the game. Illinois immediately responded their first time up, with Drake Westcott and Jacob Schroeder launching back-to-back solo shots to give the Illini a 2-1 lead.

The Orange and Blue added to their lead in the second when Cal Hejza doubled home Camden Janik, who started the inning with a walk. Westcott then continued his torrid stretch at the plate by slugging another two-out solo home run to make it 4-1. Dating back to his final at-bat on Saturday, the Edwardsville, Ill., native had homered in three-straight plate appearances.

Julius Sanchez, bolstered by the run support, settled in on the mound and kept the Spartans off the board. Sanchez put up three-straight scoreless frames, picking up two strikeouts and inducing two double plays. None of the six hits that he allowed in his outing went for extra bases.

Michigan State would score twice in the fifth to cut the lead to one, but TJ Constertina entered the game in relief and stranded a pair of runners to keep Illinois in front. Constertina would work a total of 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out three batters and allowing just one hit.

The Illini grabbed one of those runs back in the sixth when Janik launched a solo home run two batters into the inning to make it a 5-3 ballgame.

Alex Vera and Korey Bunselmeyer each tossed a scoreless frame in relief to keep Illinois in front, combining for two strikeouts and allowing just one hit.

The Illini broke the game wide open in the eighth by scoring five times to put the contest out of reach. Ryan Moerman led off the inning with a home run and Danny Doligale would double home a pair of runs four batters later. Branden Comia then stepped up and slugged a two-run shot to cap the scoring in the inning and making it a 10-3 game.

Jack Crowder worked a quick 1-2-3 ninth to give Illinois its first Big Ten series sweep of the season.

The Fighting Illini will be back in action on Friday when they begin their final Big Ten series of the season at Rutgers. First pitch for the series opener is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. CT.

BIG TEN RELEASE // ILLINOIS MEN’S GOLF MEDIA BOX

ROSEMONT, Ill. --
Fighting Illini men's golf was recognized by the Big Ten on Wednesday morning as the conference announced its annual postseason awards.

Fifth-year senior Adrien Dumont de Chassart was again the unanimous selection for the conference's top honor as he captured his third consecutive Big Ten Golfer of the Year award. Dumont de Chassart was joined on the Big Ten All-Conference first team by fellow fifth-year seniors Tommy Kuhl and Matthis Besard, and sophomore Jackson Buchanan. Junior Piercen Hunt was tabbed as a second-team All-Big Ten performer. Kuhl was also named as the Illini's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for the second time, and head coach Mike Small took home his record 13th Big Ten Coach of the Year laurel.

Dumont de Chassart, who last week was selected as Illinois' Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, takes home the Illinois program's 14th Big Ten Golfer of the Year award. In doing so, he becomes the first Illini men's athlete to win his sport's Big Ten Athlete of the Year honor three times, and joins Illini volleyball Hall of Famer Mary Eggers, who won Big Ten Volleyball Player of the Year in 1986, 1987, and 1988, as only the second Illinois athlete to complete the feat. Overall, he is just the third golfer in Big Ten history to take home the award three times, joining Randy Leen of Indiana (from 1996-98) and Luke Donald of Northwestern (from 1999-2001).

Dumont de Chassart, is a unanimous first-team All-B1G selection for the second straight year, his fourth-career all-conference award following first-team nods in 2021 and 2022, and a second-team selection as a freshman in 2019. A 2023 Ben Hogan Award semifinalist, Dumont de Chassart is coming off of his fourth All-Big Ten Championship Team performance with a tie for fifth to help lead the Illini to their eighth consecutive Big Ten title at Galloway (N.J.) National Golf Club last weekend. Following the rain-shortened event in which the Illini won by 17 strokes over just 36 holes, Dumont de Chassart was presented with his second straight Les Bolstad Award as the golfer with the league's best average (69.63), the lowest mark on record since the award's inception in 1974 and on pace to set the program record he established last season. Dumont de Chassart captured his fourth collegiate victory this season at the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate, and has top-16 finishes all 11 events on the year, including three additional runner-ups. He closed as Illinois first- or second-place finisher in eight events, pacing the squad in a team-leading five tournaments, and has tallied a team-most 24 (out of 32) rounds at par or better.

Buchanan ranks third on the team with 19 of 32 rounds at par or better, including 10 rounds in the 60s.
