Afternoon TV had a long special of a man who refused the evacuation order in the maelstrom of fire and wind.
He was born there in 1960, it was his parents' home. He inherited it, looks like his Wife passed awhile ago.
Anyway, he had nowhere to go so he stayed. Had a normal size pool and koi pond. 2 inch hose that pumped a nice stream of water.
One story ranch, some trees in back yard. Kept watering the trees and any sparks on the home. He had extra time and pool water, so he did the same thing to his neighbors ! He stayed awake for 16 hours ! Fire passed on, NO MAJOR damage to the homes that he watched ! His neighbors had evacuated and had no idea he had saved their homes ! "Thanks !"

This is an interesting data set collected just before the fires started in LA. If you have 6 minutes the video has been edited so it is easy to follow or the article says pretty much the same thing.
A company sells sensors for people to install in their homes to monitor their internal wiring for faults (sparks) that could occur and cause a house fire. Their service includes uplifting the data to the cloud so they can notify you of an issue and try to sell you services to fix the problem. They have 14000 of these sensors installed in LA and with the cumulative data they collect they also can sense faults in the grid outside the homes. They report that faults in the grid increased just before the fires broke out in the major fire areas in the hundreds.
They repeatedly say there is no proof or claim that this means the grid ignited some of the fires, just that they detected a large increase in faults in the nearby grid.
He also says no utility uses his data so the faults they are detecting may or may not be relevant but I thought it was interesting. In both N Calif and Maui power lines have been blamed for starting fires and I think there are guidelines on premptively turning off the power in dangerous conditions. Hurricane force winds may be one of those dangerous conditions?
