Illinois Returns to Madison Square Garden to Face Duke in SentinelOne Classic on Feb. 22

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois will face Duke at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025 in the SentinelOne Classic, marking the Fighting Illini's return to "The World's Most Famous Arena" for a third consecutive season.

The matchup, which will be broadcast on FOX, features Big Ten and ACC programs that advanced to the Elite Eight and finished in the top-10 of the final Associated Press poll last season.

Illinois is coming off one of its best seasons in school history. The Fighting Illini claimed its third Big Ten title in four years, reached the Elite Eight for the first time since 2005, and finished the season ranked No. 6 in the final AP poll. Illinois' 29-9 record in 2023-24 represents the third-most wins in program history and was the fifth straight 20-win season under head coach Brad Underwood.

Duke finished 27-9 last season and ranked No. 9 in the final AP poll during John Scheyer's second year as head coach. The campaign was highlighted by a run to the program's 24th all-time Elite Eight appearance.

Illinois and Duke will meet for the ninth time, with the Blue Devils owning a 5-3 edge in the all-time series. The programs last met on Dec. 8, 2020, with Underwood's 10th-ranked Illini posting an 83-68 win over No. 6 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Illinois secured marquee victories each of the previous two seasons at MSG. Last year, the Illini defeated No. 11 Florida Atlantic, 98-89, behind matching 33-point performances from Terrence Shannon Jr. and Marcus Domask. The year prior, Illinois staged a late-game comeback to beat No. 2 Texas, 85-78, in overtime.

Illinois has played 14 games all-time at Madison Square Garden, compiling a 6-8 record. The Illini are 3-1 at MSG under Brad Underwood, which includes an active three-game winning streak.

Ticketing information for the SentinelOne Classic will be announced soon. I FUND members and Men's Basketball season ticket holders will receive an email from the Illinois Ticket Office with instructions on how to order tickets within Illinois' designated sections.

Saturday Illini practice notes: position battles, position-by-position notes

Illinois held a practice on Saturday at approximately 10:30 a.m. The practice was fully open to the media, so it was the most in-depth look we have had of the team during training camp.

As we get closer to the opener against EIU on August 29, we saw very few reps for the third-string players on Saturday. Almost all of the reps on offense were 1st / 2nd team. A few third team guys saw action on defense.

Overall, it was a much better day for the defense than for the offense. The Illini passing game looked pretty sluggish, with some protection issues and a few drops by the wideouts.

Golf Illini announce fall schedule

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – University of Illinois men's golf head coach Mike Small announced the program's fall schedule on Thursday.

The Illini are slated to begin the 2024-25 season, Small's 25th at the helm of the Orange and Blue, with five events in September and October.

"We are excited to open up another season of Fighting Illini golf," Small said. "Our fall schedule features a great mixture of familiar tournaments – including our own premier event at Olympia Fields – with several new challenges. That combination will provide a foundation that will help our team build towards our championship goals."

SEPTEMBER

The season opens Sept. 9-11 when the Fighting Illini tee off at the Folds of Honor Collegiate, co-hosted by Folds of Honor, Michigan State, Florida State, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), and HNS Sports Group, at American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich. It marks the second time in the field at Folds of Honor for the Illini who won the inaugural event in 2022 behind a stellar performance (T3) from then-sophomore Jackson Buchanan.

The 2024 Folds of Honor Collegiate will feature live television coverage on Golf Channel and Peacock.

Following play in Michigan, Illinois hosts another of the season's most prestigious collegiate events at famed Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill. The Fighting Illini will once again welcome 14 peers for the 18th annual OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational, contested on the Par-70, 7,310-yard North Course. The event is recognized annually for offering a demanding but fair early-season test that attracts one of the best fields in collegiate golf.

The Orange and Blue remain in Illinois to close out the first month of the season at the Windon Memorial Classic, hosted by Northwestern at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill., Sept. 29-30.

OCTOBER

As the calendar turns to October, Illinois closes out the fall slate with a pair of new challenges over an eight-day span along the Gulf Coast.

First, the Orange and Blue tee off at the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational, co-hosted by Southern Miss and Ole Miss at Fallen Oak at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino's Fallen Oak Course, Oct. 19-21.

The Illini's final event of the fall begins just five days later at South Alabama's Steelwood Collegiate Invitational, which will be contested at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala., Oct. 26-27.

Details of the Fighting Illini's spring schedule will be released at a later date.

Illinois enters the 2024-25 season in search of the program's 14th Big Ten Championship under head coach Mike Small's guidance. The Illini captured the NCAA Stanford Regional title last spring, then finished first through 72 holes of stroke play at the NCAA Championship before posting the team's ninth top-five national finish since 2011 as one of the final eight program's vying for the national title in the match play portion of the championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
