Chase Brown Continues Impressive Weekend for Illini at the NFL Combine

Illinois NFL Combine History | Full Combine Recap

INDIANAPOLIS -- Illinois All-American running back Chase Brown was on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Sunday as part of the NFL Combine. Brown had a big day, finishing in the top five among running backs in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, and broad jump, including the best marks in both jumps among his position group.

Brown continued Illinois' strong showing at the NFL Combine, following his twin brother, Sydney Brown, and Jartavius Martin. Together the three produced the three best verticals in Illinois history at the NFL Combine and the three best broad jumps in Illinois history at the NFL Combine.

Brown's 40-yard dash time of 4.43 seconds ranked fifth among running backs and was the fifth-best time in Illinois history. Brown and East Carolina's Keaton Mitchell are the only running backs to finish in the top five of Sunday's three main events (40, vertical, broad) among their position group.

Head coach Mike Small's team is once again coming off of a successful fall campaign with its sights set on maintaining the program's championship standard. The team closed the fall at No. 7 in the Golfstat national rankings, and tallied top-5 finishes in all four events during the first half of the season schedule, including back-to-back wins at the inaugural Folds of Honor Collegiate and the Dayton Flyer Invitational.

Individually, the Illini lineup combined to post six top-five finishes, led by three from fifth-year senior Tommy Kuhl, and another pair from classmate Adrien Dumont de Chassart. The duo – who also appear together on both the 2023 Haskins Award and Hogan Award watch lists –closed the fall season rated 10th and 13th, respectively in the Golfstat individual rankings.

FEBRUARY

February marks the official return for the Illini, Feb. 13-14, at the Hal Williams Collegiate (formerly the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate), hosted by South Alabama at Magnolia Grove Country Club's Crossings Course in Mobile, Ala. The Illini have competed in the event in each of the last three seasons, finishing as the runners-up in 2020 before winning the event in 2021 and finishing third in 2022.

Illinois closes February, for the second straight season, with a tough test at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, in Las Vegas, Nev. The event, hosted by UNLV, annually draws a strong field of championship-caliber programs to test themselves on a challenging desert track.

MARCH

As the calendar turns to March, the Illini look ahead to March 17-18 when the team is slated for a return to desert golf, taking on the field at the University of Arizona's National Invitational Tournament, hosted at Omni Tucson National in Tucson, Ariz.

APRIL

April begins with the Illini returning to the epicenter of the golf world, Augusta, Ga., for the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational. The event is hosted by Augusta University at Forest Hills Golf Club – just miles from Augusta National Golf Club – and takes place April 1-2, concluding on the eve of Masters week.

Following play in Augusta, the Orange and Blue travel to Columbia, Mo., to compete in Missouri's Tiger Collegiate Invitational at the Club at Old Hawthorne before returning home to close out the regular season schedule.

The Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate is set for April 22-23, when Fighting Illini will officially christen the championship-caliber Atkins Golf Club at the University of Illinois. The event not only marks the first collegiate event at the newly renovated facility, located just minutes from the team's state-of-the-art practice facility, but also the team's first event in the Urbana-Champaign community since the 2010-11 season.

POSTSEASON

The Fighting Illini's 2023 postseason run begins April 28-30 at the Big Ten Championship. The Orange and Blue are in search of their eighth-consecutive Big Ten title – and their 13th out of the last 14 dating back to 2009. The 2023 Big Ten Championship will take place at Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, N.J.

NCAA Regionals are slated for May 15-17, and will be held at one of six sites around the country: Auburn University Club (Auburn, Ala.), Eagle Eye Golf Club (Bath, Mich.), Bear's Best Las Vegas (Las Vegas, Nev.), The Institute Golf Club (Morgan Hill, Calif.), Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club (Norman, Okla.), and The Cliffs at Keowee Falls (Salem, S.C.).

The NCAA National Championship will return to the Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 26-31. Illinois will be looking for the program's 14th NCAA Championship berth in 15 years dating back to 2008.

Tournament dates and times are subject to change. Stay tuned to FightingIllini.com for the latest on Illinois men's golf.

Why not Nebraska?

Let's do an A vs. B vs. C vs. D vs. E comparison

Team A (92 NET)
4-10 Quad 1
3-5 Quad 2
No Quad 3/ Quad 4 losses

Team B (78 NET)
6-7 Quad 1
5-5 Quad 2
1 Quad 3 loss

Team C (56 NET)
5-6 Quad 1
4-5 Quad 2
1 Quad 3 loss

Team D (54 NET)
3-11 Quad 1
5-2 Quad 2
1 Quad 4 loss

Team E (40 NET)
5-6 Quad 1
4-4 Quad 2
3 Quad 3 losses

That's where they start. Imagine this is where they are on Selection Sunday
Team A (80 NET)
6-11 Quad 1
3-5 Quad 2
No Quad 3/ Quad 4 losses

Team B (76 NET)
6-8 Quad 1
6-5 Quad 2
1 Quad 3 loss

Team C (60 NET)
5-7 Quad 1
4-5 Quad 2
1 Quad 3 loss

Team D (51 NET)
4-12 Quad 1
5-2 Quad 2
1 Quad 4 loss

Team E (45 NET)
5-6 Quad 1
4-5 Quad 2
3 Quad 3 losses

Now who is in?

Team A is Nebraska (could beat Minnesota, Maryland, Indiana, and lose to Illinois)
Team B is Wisconsin (could beat Ohio State and lose to Iowa)
Team C is Penn State (could lose to Illinois)
Team D is Michigan (could beat Rutgers and lose to Purdue)
Team E is Rutgers (could lose to Michigan)

At some point Nebraska starts to look pretty comparable to these other teams if they have more Quad 1 wins than losses that aren't Quad 1. I know they are 16-15 right now but they could make a BTT run and sneak an at-large.

A lot of yuck on the Big Ten bubble, but there is a path for 4 of 5 of these teams to play on Saturday. That might be enough for them.

BTT and NCAA Seeding

Assuming we don't get the double-bye in the BTT, here's roughly where I think we stand for NCAA Tournament seeding:

Lose to Purdue + 0-1 BTT = 20-12 = 8-seed
Lose to Purdue + 1-1 BTT = 21-12 = 7-seed
Lose to Purdue + 2-1 BTT = 22-12 = 6-seed
Lose to Purdue + 3-1/4-0 BTT = 23-12/24-11 = 4 seed

Beat Purdue + 0-1 BTT = 21-11 = 6-seed
Beat Purdue + 1-1 BTT = 22-11 = 5-seed
Beat Purdue + 2-1 BTT = 23-11 = 4-seed
Beat Purdue + 3-1/4-0 BTT = 24-11/25-10 = 3 seed

It's important to note that you can't have conference matchups in the first two games, so (credit to the Illiniboard guy for noticing) if we have Purdue as a 1 seed then there are only 3 Big Ten teams that could end up as 8/9 seeds. There's a whole mess of Big Ten teams in that range so we may be artificially bumped up or down a seed.

Here's the master Big Ten Tournament seeding matrix. All 128 possibilities from the 7 remaining games. We can be any seed from the 2 seed to the 9 seed.
