Golf Illinois’ Buchanan, Hunt to compete at 123rd U.S. Amateur

CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. – Fighting Illini rising senior Piercen Hunt and rising junior Jackson Buchanan are each set to represent the Orange & Blue when play opens Monday at the 123rd U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club and stroke-play co-host venue Colorado Golf Club.

The Illini duo will be part of a field of 312 competitors vying for the prestigious Havemeyer Trophy. The winner of the U.S. Amateur also earns exemptions from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Amateurs, an exemption into the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, and an exemption into the 2024 Open Championship (as an amateur), plus a likely invitation into the 2024 Masters Tournament (as an amateur).

Hunt punched his ticket with a second-place finish in the qualifier at Hidden Glen Golf Club in Cedarburg, Wis., where he shot 73-69 to finish 2-under and advance by a one-stroke margin. It marks a third consecutive trip to the U.S. Amateur for Hunt who also competed at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club in 2021 and The Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J., last year.

Buchanan, the runner-up at the 2023 NCAA Championship in May, will make his U.S. Amateur debut. The Dacula, Ga., native was co-medalist at the Dataw Island Club on St. Helena Island, S.C., where he carded a 10-under 134 (68-66) to secure one of five spots up for grabs.

Competitors will play 18 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday (one round at each course) before a cut down to 64 for Wednesday's opening round of match play. Thursday features the Round of 32, followed by quarterfinals on Friday, semifinals on Saturday, and culminating with Sunday's 36-hole championship match.

Golf Illini Men’s Golf Adds Pair of Grad Transfers for 2023-24

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois men's golf head coach Mike Small announced Friday the additions of graduate transfers Timmy Crawford and Tyler Goecke to the Fighting Illini program.

Crawford comes to Illinois after an all-conference caliber career at Loyola University Chicago, while Goecke joins the Fighting Illini following his time as an all-region performer at Wright State.

“We are very excited to add two veteran competitors in Timmy and Tyler to our program,” Small said. “Graduate transfers with championship track records can add value to any golf team. The talent, presence, and strong work ethic that Timmy and Tyler both possess will fit in nicely with our experienced returners and talented freshmen. I can’t wait for them to all get on campus together as we build towards another great year of Illini golf.”

The duo, along with fall signees Max Herendeen, Adam Hunt, and Ethan Wilson, completes the Illini’s crop of newcomers for the 2023-24 season.

TIMMY CRAWFORD | ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, ILL. | LOYOLA CHICAGO

CRAWFORD’S HIGHLIGHTS:
Crawford competed in 92 stoke play rounds over his four seasons at Loyola Chicago, earning all-conference honors in 2020-21 as a sophomore in the Missouri Valley Conference, and again as a senior in 2022-23, the Ramblers’ inaugural campaign in the Atlantic 10. In addition to his all-conference accolades last season, Crawford set the program’s single-season record for stroke average at 71.5, while also tallying single-season program bests for rounds of even-par or better (15), birdies (105) and eagles (7). Overall, Crawford posted top-10 finishes in 10 stroke play events during his Loyola career with four runner-up finishes. His first runner-up performances led the Ramblers to the program’s first Missouri Valley Conference Championship in 2021 en route to a berth in the NCAA Noblesville Regional, while his last helped the team to a second-place finish in their first A-10 Championship tournament in 2023.

QUOTING CRAWFORD: "I chose Illinois because of the excellent coaching staff and winning culture. I’m thrilled for the opportunity to represent my home state’s university and help continue the winning tradition here at Illinois."

TYLER GOECKE | XENIA, OHIO | WRIGHT STATE

GOECKE’S HIGHLIGHTS:
Goecke closed out a decorated career at Wright State as a two-time Horizon League Golfer of the Year (2022 and 2023), and his individual title at the 2023 Horizon League Championship was one of seven career victories as a Ranger. Overall, he played 108 rounds of stroke play at Wright State and established a program record with a career stroke average of 71.29, while also earning three first-team All-Horizon League selections (2021, 2022, and 2023), two Horizon League All-Tournament Team laurels (2022 and 2023), and a 2023 PING All-Midwest Region nod from the GCAA. Goecke’s runner-up finish at the 2022 Horizon League Championship helped Wright State capture the team title. He also played in two NCAA Regionals, advancing with his team to the Columbus (Ohio) Regional in 2022, before making a return trip as an individual competitor at the Bath (Mich.) Regional this past May. In the classroom, Goecke also earned Horizon League Academic Honor Roll accolades as a sophomore in 2021 and a senior in 2023.

QUOTING GOECKE: “I chose Illinois for the culture and success of the program. Illinois has a great history of professional golfers and I look forward to learning from Coach Small and Coach Sondjaja.”

Wednesday practice notes Aug 9

Illinois was back on the practice field Wednesday morning at 10:30. It was the first day in full pads following the 7-day acclimation period. The team practiced on the grass fields today.

Out today were RB Jordan Anderson, OLB Jared Badie, SAF Mathew Bailey, WR Hank Beatty, SAF Nicario Harper, and OL Dezmond Schuster.

Anderson tweaked his back on Monday and missed the last two practices. He should be back this week. Badie's undisclosed injury carried over to fall camp. He was dressed but limited.

Bailey was on crutches and wearing a boot on his right foot. Same injury that kept him sidelined in the spring. Bielema has indicated that Bailey should return approximately two weeks before the opener against Toledo. Schuster's "physical" issue is longer term than expected. No timetable.

NFL scouts were there from the Chargers and Steelers.

DEFENSE NOTES

Cornerbacks did a lot of work on press-man coverage and slide step technique. Taz Nicholson and Tyler Strain continue to be the top two guys.

Again, I like what I'm seeing from freshman Jaheim Clarke. He's long and twitchy, just needs muscle. I love his ability to plant and break on the football. He would have benefited from being here early for spring ball, so he has some catching up to do.

There's still a battle going on for No. 3 corner. In the mix are Prince Ford, Kaleb Patterson, and freshmen Clark, Zach Tobe, and Saboor Karriem. Tobe and Karriem may eventually end up at safety.

STAR / Nickel depth chart appears to be Xavier Scott, Tyson Rooks, and Elijah Mc-Cantos.

FIU transfer Demetrius Hill continues to impress. We loved how he moved the first few day of practice in shells, now he shows some physicality with the team in full pads. He should start at free safety, with Bailey now projected to play strong safety.

Linebacker may be a stronger and deeper position that thought with the emergence of Malachi Hood. Hood and Dylan Rosiek are the 2's right now behind MLB Tarique Barnes and WILL Kenenna Odeluga.

I love what I'm seeing from Hood in particular. A converted strong safety, he's 6-2, long, and is now up to 220 pounds. He jumps out at you in drills because of his ability to move laterally and close on the ball in short bursts.

I didn't get a chance to watch the defensive line today. A couple of personnel changes. Freshmen Mason Muragin and Pat Farrell were initially listed at DL and OLB respectively. It's not the other way around. Muragin is playing OLB and Farrell inside at DL. Muragin has been a standout.

OFFENSE NOTES

It is legitimately a three-man race to start at right guard between Jordyn Slaughter, Josh Gesky, and freshman Brandon Henderson. They're giving Slaughter his shot, but I would put my money on Gesky right now. The ability to move laterally gives him the edge over Slaughter, IMO. Henderson is the most talented, so don't rule him out.

WR starters continue to be Isaiah Williamsm, Pat Bryant, and Casey Washington.. Malik Elzy will likely be the the fourth wide receiver to start the season. There's a reason why the staff is repping Bryant both at X-WR and in the slot. Elzy is going to play a lot on the outside. I know some are tempering expectations, but why? The kid is the most gifted sill position player on the team.

After those four, it's a battle for reps between Kenari Wilcher, Shawn Miller, Alex Capka-Jones, Collin Dixon, Eian Pugh, Ashton Hollins, and Hank Beatty (out today).

I don't see enough speed and quick-cut ability from Capka-Jones, honestly, but they like him in the red zone. Hollins is another guy they like because of his size and straight line speed. He needs to learn to make sharper cuts. He was rounding them off today and he has to gather his feet before cutting. Still learning after playing a lot of defense in high school. He's also rail thin.

I mentioned Aidan Laughery a couple of days ago. I need to see more, but I'm more and more convinced he can carve out a role this year as a 3rd down back. He looks really natural running routes out of the backfield and has good hands.

No predictions, but Josh McCray does look in better physical condition and seems to have the burst back that he had as a freshman. He's a huge key to the season. I like how he was moving and cutting in running back drills. Need to see him in live action now. His vision is a question mark for me.

It's still a competition for QB2 between Donovan Leary and John Paddock. I like Leary to win that battle. However, Paddock is more comfortable handling the ball and executing on read options, RPO's etc. That's where his experience comes ins. He's not a threat to stretch the field, though.
