Kurt Kittner to serve as honorary captain vs. Michigan State

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Former Illinois quarterback Kurt Kittner will serve as the Illinois football team's honorary captain against Michigan State on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT on FS1.

Kittner was a four-year letterwinner at Illinois from 1998-2001. He led Illinois to the 2001 Big Ten title as a senior and took the Illini to the 2002 Sugar Bowl, Illinois' first appearance in the Bowl Championship Series, and a 10-2 record.

Kittner, a native of Schaumburg, left Illinois as the school's all-time winningest quarterback and holder of four school records: career total offense, career and single season touchdown passes, and career passing attempts. He was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team after leading the Big Ten in passing yards (3,256) and passing touchdowns (27) as a senior.

Kittner was drafted in the fifth round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

OT: Chancellor Robert Jones to step down in June 2025

MASSMAIL - An incredibly difficult decision
November 13, 2024 9:02 AM
Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,
As I am sure you will agree, I have sent numerous massmails throughout my tenure as the 10th Chancellor of the University of Illinois. Some have certainly been easier than others.
This is a hard one.
In fact, it is tied to the most difficult decision that I have had to make across my nearly 47 years in higher education. I am writing to let you know that I will be ending my tenure as chancellor at the end of June 2025. At that point, I will have been in this role for nearly nine years, which will be the longest tenure of any chancellor of this university since the first chancellor served nearly 57 years ago. But choosing the best time to step away from a job and a university community I truly love is an entirely different thing. I really believe this is the right time to begin the transition to find the next chancellor of this great university.
When I joined the Illinois family in 2016, I knew I was coming to an outstanding public university with an impossibly long list of discoveries, inventions and world-changing ideas. I knew that serving as the next chancellor here was a tremendous personal and professional opportunity. What I did not know was that it would also be the most profound experience of my career in higher education.
It has not always been easy. We have endured the worst budget crisis in our state’s history. We navigated the worst global health crisis in living memory. We have shared the intense pain, sorrow and suffering that are the inevitable prices of inequity, injustice and war. But it has been in these most difficult moments when I have gotten to see the strength of character of the students, faculty and staff who choose to call this university their home. Time and again, you have demonstrated a fearless commitment to the pursuit of knowledge that is matched only by your generosity of spirit and your care and empathy for others. I am extremely proud of what I have seen you all accomplish, together, even when it seemed like everyone else in the world was telling you it was impossible. The university is at a historical highpoint in its transformational impact on the nation and the world, and that makes it even harder for me to step away.
I am so very grateful to all of you over the past eight years who have shown me patience, enlightened me, extended me grace and helped me truly understand what it means to be a member of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign family. Thank you for letting me be a part of your Illinois experience. That is a very special and treasured gift.
I look forward to working closely with my leadership team, our deans and the University System to navigate this transition as smoothly as possible. And I promise I will do everything I can to help ensure that your next chancellor has the skills, experience, bold vision and courage that the students, staff, faculty and alumni of this university expect and deserve.
If you have heard me speak publicly, you have probably heard me say that it is my great privilege to serve as chancellor of the greatest public university in the world. That was never a throwaway line. It was just the truth. I mean it every time I say it. And never more than I do today.
Sincerely,
Robert J. Jones
Chancellor

Finney on why she chose Illinois: “I really liked the family feel of the team and coaches, which was important to me with moving to the other side of the world. I also love the team’s style of play along with Coach Green's competitive nature and clear plan for the program's future.”

Coach Green on Finney: “Erica Finney comes to us from Australia. She’s an elite shooter with deep, deep range. Erica can shoot it from the logo, so when you have an ability like that, she can really stretch the floor and has an endless range. She is someone that’s going to really help us, especially with a lot of fours and fives that we’ve added in this class, now defense is going to have to go out and guard her. Erica is a really tough kid and competitor who brings a lot of grit to us. With her enrolling early, we’ll have some extra months with Erica in our strength and conditioning program, nutrition, and on the court, that she will benefit from and be a big impact player for us next season.”

Start time for the Maryland-Eastern Shore game Sat. Nov. 23

This start time to this game was originally listed on FightingIllini.com as TBA and I imagine that was because the DIA was waiting to see what time the football game vs. Rutgers would be determined.

Although there is no official announcement about the start time on the website and the FI App, both are listing the start time as 3:00 p.m. CT to air on B1G+.

Ironically, the FI app has not been updated to show the start time of the Rutgers game (11:00 a.m. CT on Peacock).

Sad News…

Those of you who have been around this board a long time may remember “IlliniViv”. In addition to being a longtime Illini fan, he actually was a walk on for Lou H. In the early 90s.

John was a great guy who was a lot of fun to be around in our younger days. He will be missed by many.

Will Riley named Big Ten freshman of the week

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– Illinois forward Will Riley is the inaugural Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the 2024-25 season, the conference office announced Monday. Riley earns the award after a record-setting performance with the Fighting Illini.

Riley broke the Illinois freshman debut scoring record last Monday, pouring in 31 points on 10-for-13 shooting, including 5-for-6 on 3-pointers, to go along with 6-of-7 free throws in the win over Eastern Illinois. It was the first 30-point game by an Illini freshman in a debut and topped the previous school mark of 28 points (Adam Miller on Nov. 25, 2020). It also ranks as the most points by any Big Ten freshman in his debut since the opening of the 2007-08 season. Riley added seven rebounds and three assists vs. EIU.

He scored in double figures again in Friday's win over SIU Edwardsville, finishing with 14 points.

For the week, Riley averaged a team-best 22.7 points with 7.0 rebounds on 60% shooting (15-25), 72.7% from three (8-11), and 77.8% on free throws (7-9).

Riley and the Illini are back in action Wednesday night at State Farm Center, hosting Oakland (8 p.m. CT, BTN).
