In the 70's the NJSP taught the safe use of the "choke hold" on recalcitrant individuals, by Troopers who had problems controlling anyone.
I never used it.

I only used it once in a road rage incident, when I was headed home. Other guy was going road rage on me, so I parked a mile from home and he came at me with a baseball bat. I subdued him from the bat, put him in the choke. He went out in just seconds. I left, I checked on him 10 minutes later, he was gone !

When I was bouncing in college and after, I never choked or punched anyone out. I would twist them to facing away and put them into a full nelson and pick them off the floor for a fast exit to the parking lot. Being carried away, tended to calm them down.
