Well, congratulations are in order @JeffT818 , you completed your switch to the Democratic Party and voted for the worst president in your lifetime. You folllowed it up by doubling down on stupid.

Pretty epic for a “Reagan Republican”

It didn’t take 2 months into the Biden Admin for me to suggest Jimmy Carter would be happy to not be considered the worst anymore.

Edit: I also wonder if Jeff can do the math probability of all the late votes/vote counting and races all going to Democrats.

Unless Vance really falls hard on his face, I don't think RDS has much of a chance. Very competent governor, but he lacks charisma that Vance seems to have in spades. I don't think SecDef or whatever Trump might do to "level the playing field" for RDS would move the needle for him defeating Vance for the nomination if Vance decides he wants it. For their party to keep the WH after Trump, it will require a very successful second Trump admin, which would Make Vance even harder to push aside in a primary.

As a sideline observer to the political parties, it's amazing how reliably the (R)'s of the last decade or two become their own worst enemies as soon as the balance of power tips in their favor, with spurned presidential hopefuls of the past leading the charge. Hopefully that thread is mostly about extrapolating past (R) behavior to kill time and fill in gaps until we see what really happens. As a competent guy, it seems like the (R)s would want to keep RDS actively on their team, but the subtext seems to be he wants the top job or he'll do what he can to burn it all down. Not good.
The heart of the fighting among Republicans is the difference of opinion between newer ideologues (the best word I can come up with in two seconds) and the big government Rockefeller republicans. You can probably put Bush 41, McCain, and Romney in that group. As the big government Rs are fading away, I think some of these conflicts will go away, too.

Bush 41 lacked charisma. Especially considering the icon he was following. It’s too soon to tell. I do not think RDS is the type who burns it all down out of spite. He is quite logical. I don’t think he needs to be the guy either, but he should be a leader in the party. It’s not like Trump didn’t assimilate RDS’ policy ideas from getting rid of government agencies to border issues and sending US Armed Forces to deal with Mexican Drug Cartels.
True about Bush 41, and if it weren't for that tweet-thread I wouldn't have thought at all about RDS throwing wrenches into the works, or even threatening to, to further his own ambitions. That's why I suggested maybe it's just people looking for something to speculate/gossip about while the next 6 weeks go by and what's really going to happen starts happening. If I was an (R) I'd want to keep him on the team, and even just as an interested citizen, I'd like to see him have some role in governing as he seems like a bastion of sanity.

The secretary of the department of defense is a job for a soldier and a leader of military personnel (we might actually need a leader in a time of war despite Trump being president). RDS is a great chief executive, which is a little different. He is ex Navy and very capable but if he does it for just 4 years, with the last 2 campaigning for president, I'm not sure there aren't better choices for this particular role. Kinda depends on him and what his mindset is.
