How do we feel about this? Doug, thoughts?

I will say this. Gill seems like a really good guy and a good coach. I heard him on SMSL recently and was quite impressed once again. My take is great ambassador for the university. Great credentials. But no experience as a DC.

Considering that offenses are becoming high octane pass first once again, I see the value in having a back 7 guy making the calls. That's Gill's world. Bringing Hudson in is a nice compliment when it comes to teaching and communication. Byrd spoke very specific to this in his interview with Loren and Steve. (Meaning needing to communicate much better in the back 7)

So... throwing the Miles Smith as LB Coach aside for the moment, how do we feel with Gill Byrd calling plays and being DC?

Part of me thinks it can make sense and that's the hope in me. The other part suggests these moves are the bridge to Rod Smith becoming HC at Illinois after next season. Offense good, defense still sucks.
