As many of you are aware, Hackman grew up in Danville, IL.

And per Wikipedia:
"He began a study of journalism and television production at the University of Illinois under the G.I. Bill, but left without graduating and moved back to California" He was born in San Bernadino, but moved frequently before settling in Danville.

I have watched Hoosiers what feels like a million times and it never gets old.

I have been to New Richmond, IN, which is not too far from Champaign-Urbana or West Lafayette, which is the town used for the exterior shots of Hickory. The blinking red traffic light in the center of town is still there.

I have been to Knightstown, IN where the Hickory Gym is located. It is still being used today for games and when I went, you could visit for free. The curator was nice enough even to take me into the small locker room used in the scenes before the first game of the season.

I took the following Norman Dale move quotes from a radio station website and I agree these are all classic:

  • My practices aren’t designed for your enjoyment”

  • “Five players on the floor functioning as one single unit: team, team, team – no one more important than the other”

  • “I’ve seen you guys can shoot but there’s more to the game than shooting. There’s fundamentals and defense”

  • “I love you guys”

  • “I would hope you would support who we are. Not, who we are not”

  • “That kind of commitment and effort deserves and demands your respect. This is your team”

But my favorite:
"If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your potential, to be the best that you can be, I don't care what the scoreboard says at the end of the game, in my book we're gonna be winners".

RIP: Gene Hackman
