I talked to a few people in the know in Champaign over the weekend.
From what I’ve gathered, Josh Whitman really wants Lovie Smith to succeed here.
Whitman is hard to read, but most people I talked to don’t see a coaching change happening.
Also, supposedly the big shooter donors are pretty confident in Whitman and will go along with whatever he decides to do. I’m not sure that applies across the board.
The fan base has seen enough though. That’s pretty evident whoever you talk to. And some strong supporters in the media are losing faith.
Will Whitman’s hand be forced if the team loses out? Possibly. 3 or 4 wins? It may depend on how competitive they are.
Surprised to see some people basically content with the Michigan game because they fought back. You’re in a pretty bad place when that’s the case. I don’t think many of the players were happy with just being competitive though. This isn’t a joyful team right now.
