I get the math concerns about Kari Lake losing to Reuben Gallego if Trump won big in AZ but I'm not so sure.

In AZ there is no spot on the ballot to vote along party lines so we have to meticulously fill in next to each name we want to vote for. It happened in many states that people who voted for Trump also voted for a Dem as senator.

Reuben Gallego is an unknown congressman from Phoenix who has voted along party lines ever since he was elected in 2015. He doesn't stand out, he just goes along. I had no idea who he is and never have heard him actually speak until his debate with Kari (which he lost badly).

His campaign was extremely well funded and ran commercials almost non stop (across all platforms) that painted him as an ex marine who is reasonable and even bipartisan while their attack ads vilified Kari Lake on everything, including nonstop on abortion. Tbere is no truth in advertising when it comes to politics and they made Reuben a saint and Kari the opposite. In her defense she had limited funds and Reuben never was in any real situation where people could judge him except the debate, which probably wasn't watched that much.

So apparently enough people voted for the hispanic marine who is going to work across the aisle vs the firebrand anti abortion satan. Isn't advertising great? No accountability until you try it and we are stuck for 6 years.

The NY Post has already declared Reuben Gallego the winner and Fox and AP can't be far behind. AZ actually got up to 92% counted last night and another batch(es) should drop today. Where most of the uncounted votes remain favors Gallego.

apparently Mitch McConnell did not support her bid whatsoever. He is a vile individual who was dumping money into unwinnable elections in the East. I do think the overnight vote dump cost Eric Hovde the seat in Wisconsin and Mike Rogers in Michigan. I have seen it repeatedly now where the Republican is winning and Wayne county in Detroit doesn’t count their votes on time and miraculously the Democrat wins the seat…over and over again.

We can’t vote straight ticket either. The numbers just seem really bizarre. I think the biggest issue is they aren’t 100% finished. It’s been a week since the election. Same with California. It isn’t right and it leads to suspicion of which more often then not it shouldn’t.

Yep, Kari Lake hitched her wagon 100% to Trump so if you are Mitch McConnell you don't support her. Trump has alot of executive branch positions for her if she wants one.

edit: she would have been a great senator. Talent wise it is no contest of her vs Reuben Gallego.

It appears we have a country club in Washington DC, where our elected officials have forgotten this is a republic. As a republic, you represent the will of your constituents. What a bunch of babies. It’s hilarious who a few fine posters here considered “grifters”.

Bernie Moreno hitched his wagon to Trump, too, and the Republican party went all in to help him.

The election was a week ago and Republicans are already starting to eat their young.

They have to govern now. The time for platitudes is over. That means forgetting about petty stuff like who supported Trump and who didn’t and working together to get shit done. At some point, they’ll have to stop basking in the glow of the win and roll up their sleeves.

In many ways, the GOP has always behaved like an opposition party. Learn how to govern like the majority. “Shut down the government if I don’t get my way” isn’t governing.

It’s a broader coalition now, which means more diversity of opinion. Embrace it. Stop demanding a purity test.

Besides, it’s a mistake to view Trump as the ultimate protector of conservatism. He doesn’t have those types of ideological convictions. Never has.

One other thing. There’s a difference between rallying around your leader, which Republicans should do, and a cult of personality that drowns people out and alienates good people who you want on your side. You can’t run a government with five Trump sidekicks.

The tendency in eras of single party rule is to over estimate your mandate. That’s why midterm elections can be bloodbaths. Be careful, Republicans. The margins of victory in the swing states were very small.

Based on what happened in his first administration, I do not blame him to have a bunch of people around him that are “loyal”. Even his first pick for SoS had his own agenda. Nobody has to worship Trump, but the Republicans of the DC establishment variety have to play significantly nicer this go around to advance the Trump agenda and codify it. It’s what the people expect.

This is a big appointment: Lee Zeldin to head EPA. Biden's admin was 100% Green New Deal and they issued regulations on just about every appliance that exists. They also actively canceled pretty much any new leases or activity toward new oil and gas.

My guess is the career EPA employees are largely Green New Deal fans so Zeldin will earn his paycheck.

ps. Tidbit from the middle of the attached article:
"The Biden administration reportedly is attempting to dispense all available stimulus and green infrastructure funding before Trump and congressional Republicans retake power in January to prevent them from clawing back the money."

Yes, R’s need to be careful indeed…. The fair-weather independents that helped win the swing states come and go as the wind blows….

You make good points in both posts. The (R)s usually seem to fall on their faces once they have a no-excuses level of power to follow through on their promises to voters. The party itself, I don't trust at all. I think that might be why we see some instances of Trump having outperformed down-ballot (R)s. With Trump, you can believe he'll at least attempt to do what he says he will. With the (D)s you know they'll largely be in lock step and pursue the more far left road-to-totalitarian ideas they talk about. The (R)s on the legislative side you can pretty much count on to do nothing in response to voters when the ball's in their court. We'll see how it goes this time.

I sort of agree with Uncoach in terms of Trump's picks for those who serve under him. Most of the unelected semi-permanent federal government still opposes his agenda (voters be damned) and if he repeats the same mistakes of drawing from that pool for his appointments, we'll see little movement for two years then specious impeachment theatrics after the (D)s get the house back. It's critical Trump hire people committed to furthering the agenda the country voted for, his agenda, and not people still clinging to "how it's been done" for the last 30 years who will slow walk, if not betray, the administration's agenda.

It's hard to know who or what is conservative or liberal any more. The (R)s are now becoming the party of the working class, the (D)s the party of the aristocracy. (R)s are now the defenders of things like free speech and equality under the law while (D)s openly call for censorship and practice blatant lawfare. (R)s are trending anti-war and (D)s appear increasingly pro-war. (R)s (some of them) are pushing reform and (D)s are entrenched in the status quo. Some of that is simply the (D)s reflexive opposition to anything Trump espouses, but I think there's something more to it.

Aside from the far fringes of some social issues, it's not clear to me either party can claim to be the conservative party or the liberal party.
