Is that really how Florida intends to do this? I think in every case of a House member resigning, the replacement wasn't chosen until the next regular election in that state. IOW, states don't create special elections just to vote on one office as it's a huge undertaking. Most states election cycles have a date in the Spring or very early Summer for a general election.

Also, did I see Gaetz has already resigned? That would be really unusual as House and Senate members generally resign after their confirmation.

The thinking is that he resigned now so they would drop the investigation. Which is why I said this looks like less transparency, not more.

I didn’t read the article. He’s been accused of having more than just a picture on his phone.

Why would anyone be against seeing the results of the investigation? You don’t find the timing of this at all suspicious?
Who is against it? I have stated if he did something illegal and they have proof he would be in jail. Do you really believe he took NUDE pictures of an underage female and they ignored it? Or worse he trafficked her and they ignored it? Is that what you believe?

Accusations are easy. Trump colluded with Russia, Russia stole the election, 51 agents accused the NY Post of lying about Hunters laptop. All proven false.

Fact-the DOJ chose not to pursue the Gaetz allegations.

it’s amazing a 35 year old can’t recognize an obvious smear campaign. OTOH, if so many people saw these “photos” they too should be charged for conspiracy in covering up a crime.

The House seats currently stand at 218 Rep, 212 Dem and 5 undecided. Since Gaetz resigned, it effectively is 217 I think. Here is an article on the 5 undecided races. The summary is the races are close but the Rep are leading in 4 of the 5. (although Dems in Pennsylvania are finding creative ways to manufacture votes for Senate so who knows how the election finally ends.) Most certainly a Rep House, but not much room to wiggle.

He resigned so that the House Ethics report wouldn't be released. Obviously, the report is damaging or he would not have resigned.
So Jeff, if the house ethics committee has evidence of an underage human trafficker they can just flush it if the perp reigns from congress? They have no obligation to arrest or turn it over to authorities? The perp can just walk free? Is that what you are asserting here?

The House ethics committee is not law enforcement. Even if the DOJ does not prosecute, there can be ethics violations.

I think Gaetz resigned from Congress to end it all. We don't know the report was damaging but having it in the news cycle ad nauseam is not good for his confirmation so he did what he did. The Justice Department under Biden did not charge him so we all really know nothing about this other than what already has made it into the media.

My guess is the Dems will leak whatever version of the report they have, plus any other salacious details they have to a willing "journalist" or two. The Dems are going to go Defcon 5 against Gaetz and I predict it is the one Trump nominee that doesn't make it.

If he makes it, I wish him great luck. The Justice Dept, including the FBI, should be impartial and adherent to a high moral standard but under Obama and since it doesn't always seem that way. Under Biden it became as political as it shouldn't be and that needs to be fixed.

The tribal nature of this country is crazy. You can’t admit there might be concerns about Gaetz?

Having a picture of a 17 year old girl on your phone isn’t illegal.
I have a ton of concern about Gaetz, all aside from whatever indiscretion or possible crimes he committed in his personal life. I've seen too much in the last 5-6 years to condemn someone based on anonymous sourced stories on traditional news outlets. I tend to agree with IL that if they had anything they could stretch into an indictment, they would have. But who knows.

I think AG is one of Trumps most critical appointments and my gut instinct is that Gaetz isn't the best pick. It's much more persona with him than "qualifications" of which technically I don't think there are any for AG, and I'm all for an outsider rather than someone with a 10-page resume of bureaucratic GS gigs. But Gaetz has always struck me as sort of a clown, tbh. The more I think about it I think Gaetz is just a feint to distract the mob and get his other people through (mentioned by someone above and I've seen it asserted elsewhere).

Haha Stone, you have a new fan named DTrain or Icky who created a fake user Id just so he could like your posts. Quite the comeback - almost as good as an anonymous source!
No kidding…. What a cowardly turd to come on here and create a mock account of you and “like” all of the moronic posts on here.

The Democrats haven’t learned their lesson yet. Let them keep being stupid. It will only help Republicans in 2026 mid-terms.
Well, I am concerned that the Republicans haven’t learned their lesson, too. That is, Trump has the winning message and coalition. Much to the chagrin of weak minded people (icky and the Train come to mind), the Trump platform is a popular vote winner. The deep state Rs who oppose his nominees while approving Democrat transgenders, Mayor Pete, Garland, and Myorkas will be fully exposed. Musk has promised to fund primary challenges to House members who get in the way.

No, Gaetz, didn’t resign to avoid the House investigation, lol. It allows an R to replace him in a timely manner. If the House found criminal conduct, they can refer to the DOJ. Sorry, Jeff, your wet dream has no basis in reality.

Yep, up to @bucshon to deal with it. I won’t register a complaint. I guess this is how this weak minded individual mourns the end of Democracy. (FTR, we are a REPUBLIC). 2 months and 4 days until freedom reigns over the land.

Oh, I'm certain that a decent cohort of them have not. As far as people who vote (or used to vote) (R) I don't know that it matters. It's those in office that are positioned to undermine the administration, and they will do so to the best of their ability. People will either vote them out or they won't. The old guard type would rather cede power back to the democrats than respond to the electorate. The pendulum will swing some day, remains to be seen whether they can last until it does.

I would love to see Gaetz argue for the government in front of the Supreme Court. It will be hilarious! If Trump wants to appoint incompetents and nutjobs, I hope they all get confirmed. Let his administration burn down in a sea of incompetence.

Love it, Jeff! You have been wrong about most everything! I don’t think you can handle competence hence your wishy washy support for Biden and full support for Harris!

Please let me know when Merrick Garland has argued a case in front of the Supremes as AG. Anyway, once they stack the court with the Harris plan he will win every single case.

I love it. Turnabout is fair play….
I think about the worst thing that can happen is to put a right-leaning equivalent of Garland in charge of the DoJ. Politicization of justice and law enforcement is a really bad thing and amplifying it would be a disaster as the pendulum swings in both directions and it will spiral out of control. That's what my discomfort with Gaetz in that role is, I've come to realize. That said, I think it's essential to give the department a very thorough and frankly merciless root canal which ironically probably means a jettisoning of the entire DoJ leadership, and the leadership of every entity that reports to them.

Along with that, the idea of relocating a lot of these entities well away from DC is really growing on me.

I also think DOGE can be really good thing as long as it doesn't turn into a collection of political hatchet men. Again, because of the pesky swing of that pendulum and the probability it will spiral out of control. It should go after financial waste and especially the institutionalized wholesale grift.

I'm probably naive but I'm clinging to the belief that it's still possible to restore the 'for the people' charter of the federal government.

3 shot, 2 killed at an Aurora park at 2am. It’s like Groundhogs Day, you can find stories like this pretty frequently. But Florida man will tell you I’m being dramatic.

OK since you don't want to acknowledge what MANY in Congress have stated, how about the girl having appeared before the committee and testified that she was 17 and in High School when trafficked by Gaetz? How about explaining why he resigned from Congress the day before the report was to be released?
Is this the same person/women that appeared at the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings ?

Eliminating cost plus Federal contracts and fraud will go a long way to reducing the Budget.

Culling thru programs where Congressional funding has expired could help save a few bucks.

Closing and moving Federal buildings AND programs where less than 75 % show up for work (It's less than 7 % for some !) would be nice !
