Is that really how Florida intends to do this? I think in every case of a House member resigning, the replacement wasn't chosen until the next regular election in that state. IOW, states don't create special elections just to vote on one office as it's a huge undertaking. Most states election cycles have a date in the Spring or very early Summer for a general election.

Also, did I see Gaetz has already resigned? That would be really unusual as House and Senate members generally resign after their confirmation.

The thinking is that he resigned now so they would drop the investigation. Which is why I said this looks like less transparency, not more.

I didn’t read the article. He’s been accused of having more than just a picture on his phone.

Why would anyone be against seeing the results of the investigation? You don’t find the timing of this at all suspicious?
Who is against it? I have stated if he did something illegal and they have proof he would be in jail. Do you really believe he took NUDE pictures of an underage female and they ignored it? Or worse he trafficked her and they ignored it? Is that what you believe?

Again, so you believe he did these highly illegal things and because he resigned from congress, he won't get in trouble? Ok.

Accusations are easy. Trump colluded with Russia, Russia stole the election, 51 agents accused the NY Post of lying about Hunters laptop. All proven false.

Fact-the DOJ chose not pursue the Gaetz allegations.

it’s amazing a 35 year old can’t recognize an obvious smear campaign. OTOH, if so many people saw these “photos” they to should be charged for conspiracy in covering up a crime.

The House seats currently stand at 218 Rep, 212 Dem and 5 undecided. Since Gaetz resigned, it effectively is 217 I think. Here is an article on the 5 undecided races. The summary is the races are close but the Rep are leading in 4 of the 5. (although Dems in Pennsylvania are finding creative ways to manufacture votes for Senate so who knows how the election finally ends.) Most certainly a Rep House, but not much room to wiggle.

He resigned so that the House Ethics report wouldn't be released. Obviously, the report is damaging or he would not have resigned.

So Jeff, if the house ethics committee has evidence of an underage human trafficker they can just flush it if the perp reigns from congress? They have no obligation to arrest or turn it over to authorities? The perp can just walk free? Is that what you are asserting here?

The left currently has Tulsi labeled as a Russian asset

Pete is a white supremisicist

Gaetz has harmed women.

Why does all of this seem familiar?

The House ethics committee is not law enforcement. Even if the DOJ does not prosecute, there can be ethics violations.

I think Gaetz resigned from Congress to end it all. We don't know the report was damaging but having it in the news cycle ad nauseam is not good for his confirmation so he did what he did. The Justice Department under Biden did not charge him so we all really know nothing about this other than what already has made it into the media.

My guess is the Dems will leak whatever version of the report they have, plus any other salacious details they have to a willing "journalist" or two. The Dems are going to go Defcon 5 against Gaetz and I predict it is the one Trump nominee that doesn't make it.

If he makes it, I wish him great luck. The Justice Dept, including the FBI, should be impartial and adherent to a high moral standard but under Obama and since it doesn't always seem that way. Under Biden it is becoming as political as it shouldn't be and that needs to be fixed.

The tribal nature of this country is crazy. You can’t admit there might be concerns about Gaetz?

Having a picture of a 17 year old girl on your phone isn’t illegal.
I have a ton of concern about Gaetz, all aside from whatever indiscretion or possible crimes he committed in his personal life. I've seen too much in the last 5-6 years to condemn someone based on anonymous sourced stories on traditional news outlets. I tend to agree with IL that if they had anything they could stretch into an indictment, they would have. But who knows.

I think AG is one of Trumps most critical appointments and my gut instinct is that Gaetz isn't the best pick. It's much more persona with him than "qualifications" of which technically I don't think there are any for AG, and I'm all for an outsider rather than someone with a 10-page resume of bureaucratic GS gigs. But Gaetz has always struck me as sort of a clown, tbh. The more I think about it I think Gaetz is just a feint to distract the mob and get his other people through (mentioned by someone above and I've seen it asserted elsewhere).
