Couldn’t figure this out until today. This team was taller, rebounded better, and won more conference games. Otherwise it was the 2012-2013 team.
That team had some NBA guys (including the enigmatic Myke Henry,) shot a ton of threes at a poor rate, flashed potential early and struggled midseason. Won one game in each postseason tournament and earned a 7 seed and a 23-13 record.
Biggest difference is that team was a very rare NCAA Tournament team in its era whereas this is just one in a sequence of Illini teams that makes it to the NCAA Tournament every year.
Very different era at Illinois now if we have $6 million in NIL to build a roster. Certainly looks to be a more promising offseason than what we saw after the 2013 season. In this case, Illinois basketball really is in a great place.
I’m proud to be part of such a passionate fanbase that shows up and supports the team. This program is one of the “haves” in college basketball and as long as we have this fanbase we will continue to be at the top of the Big Ten.
I’ve been on this message board a long time and I start more than my share of threads so thanks for humoring me for another season. I always drink the Kool Aid starting in October and imagine the best case scenario. So days like this hurt so much and I appreciate you guys being an outlet.
Baseball message board fans are too cynical and analytical. NFL message board fans are way too reactionary and don’t really understand the game.
Illini fans here really get it and make the season more fun. Here’s to an exciting portal season and then October will get here before you know it.
