WBB Non-conference schedule announced

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The second non-conference schedule of the Shauna Green era at Illinois has been announced and features seven home games for the Fighting Illini. In addition to the previously announced game against Notre Dame, the Illinois women's basketball squad will head to the West Palm Beach Classic while playing one true road game at Marquette.

The Fighting Illini will host Truman State for an exhibition on Monday, Oct. 30, an event that will be open to the public and offer a first look of this season's squad. Illinois will also play its season opener inside State Farm Center as Morehead State visits on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

On Nov. 11, the Illini will head north for a road game at Marquette in Milwaukee. Illinois will return home for a midweek against Saint Peter's on Nov. 15 before hitting the road for the Citi Shamrock Classic against Notre Dame in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 18.

From there, Illinois' next four non-conference games are at home, with Canisius (Nov. 26), Central Connecticut State (Nov. 29), Northern Kentucky (Dec. 6), and Missouri (Dec. 17) coming to town.

Regular-season non-conference play will wrap up from Dec. 20-21 in Florida, as the Orange and Blue compete in the West Palm Beach Classic. A separate announcement will be made when the opponents and schedule for the event are finalized.

Illinois' full Big Ten schedule will be released at a later date. Home and road matchups for the 18-game schedule were announced in June.

  • Big Ten Home Games: Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Rutgers, Wisconsin
  • Big Ten Away Games: Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State, Purdue
Season tickets for the 2023-24 Illinois women's basketball season are on sale now with new seating options available.

Following a 2022-23 season that saw the Illini make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 20 years and secure their most wins (22) in a single campaign since 1999-2000, there's no better time to support Illinois and the new #OneWay Forward campaign.

In Year 1 under Shauna Green, Illinois women's basketball delivered one of the largest one-year turnarounds across the NCAA. Green led the squad to a 22-10 overall record after taking over a program that had gone 7-20 the season prior.

The Illini were ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since the 2000-01 campaign. In the stands, Illinois secured the fifth-best single-season home attendance in program history during the 2022-23 campaign, and Green became the first head coach to bring in 50,000+ fans during her first season at the helm.

The 2022-23 regular season saw Illinois post a 10-1 record in non-conference play, marking just the third time in program history the Illini registered double-digit regular-season out-of-conference victories in a single campaign.

The Illini found their rhythm to open the third set, and an ace by Barnes gave Illinois the early 8-2 advantage. A 5-0 run fueled with a pair of kills by Nunge helped the Orange and Blue extend the 13-3 lead. A 4-0 turn by Bradley led to an Illinois timeout, but Terry killed the run, keeping Illinois ahead by six. The Braves fended off set point twice, but Cari Bohm ended the set with a block to give Illinois the 25-22 victory.

The teams kept the fourth frame tight, with the Illini using a timeout while trailing 9-8. I didn’t realize until this morning

Fox pulled their Big Noon show out of Champaign this weekend. I saw a few ads for it during the Bear game but they’re heading back to Boulder for a second straight week. I can see wanting to cover Prime but doesn’t make much sense given ESPN Gameday is also there and it’s being broadcast on ESPN.

Oh well, I’ll be in Lot 31 on Saturday with a few fraternity brothers I haven’t seen in ages.

WBB Illini to play Notre Dame in Citi Shamrock Classic November 18 on national television

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The first piece of Illinois women's basketball's 2023-24 schedule has been revealed with the Fighting Illini facing off against Notre Dame from the nation's capital on Saturday, Nov. 18, in the second-annual Citi Shamrock Classic. Action on the court is slated for 12 p.m. CT, from Entertainment & Sports Arena – home of the Washington Mystics. The game will be televised live on NBC and streamed on Peacock.

In addition to the highly anticipated matchup on the court, Friday will feature a women's leadership luncheon, offering both teams an opportunity to hear from a select group of the most powerful women in business and sports. Additionally, both teams will participate in a community service initiative presented by Gatorade.

"We are thrilled to take part in this year's Citi Shamrock Classic and have the opportunity to spotlight not only the sport of women's basketball, but also women leaders on the heels of the 50th anniversary of Title IX," shared Illinois head coach Shauna Green. "The events surrounding our game against Notre Dame provide our student-athletes with the chance to network, connect, and give back in our country's capital. On top of all of that, we can't wait to compete against an elite team on the court on national television - this is great for women's basketball!"

Last season's inaugural Citi Shamrock Classic between California and Notre Dame marked the first women's college basketball game aired by NBC.

Game tickets for the 2023 Citi Shamrock Classic will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, Sept. 28. Illinois women's basketball season ticket holders and I Fund donors will receive further communication on how to order tickets prior to the general public on sale.

The nationally televised game marks Illinois women's basketball's first-ever game aired on NBC or Peacock.

Illinois' trip to Washington, D.C. will be just the second time in program history the team has played in the nation's capital. The first occurrence came on Dec. 4, 2016, at George Washington.

Golf Freshman Herendeen leads Illini to team title at Sahalee Players Championship

SAMMAMISH, Wash – The No. 9-ranked Fighting Illini men's golf team closed out a season-opening victory Sunday, besting a loaded field at the Sahalee Players Championship behind a runner-up finish by true freshman MaxHerendeen in his collegiate debut for the Orange and Blue.

"I'm really proud of the way our guys came out and started the season," head coach Mike Small said. "I think our guys did a good job of keeping their composure with the course playing so tough. I'm proud of the way the new guys have bought in to what we do, and it is great to see that show through in the results. The team has worked hard the last three weeks to prepare, and to come out and execute in the first tournament of the season, against a field as strong as this one is impressive."

Illinois finished as the only team to card an under-par score for the event, which featured 11 programs ranked or receiving votes in the firstGCAA Coaches Top-25 poll of the season. The Illini posted a 54-hole team score of 863 (-1) to win by eight strokes over No. 2-ranked Arizona State, and 11 shots ahead of host Washington. No. 18 Arizona and 23rd-ranked Duke rounded out the top 5 of the team standings at 12-over and 16-over, respectively.

Herendeen, who grew up just minutes fromSahalee Country Club in Bellevue, Wash., impressed with a 5-under 211 in his first collegiate event. Following an opening 74, he shot an 8-under 64 in Round 2 to vault to a one-stroke lead entering Sunday's finale. A clutch approach shot and the ensuing birdie putt on the final hole of regulation forced a playoff, where he was narrowly edged out by ASU sophomore PrestonSummerhays for medalist honors and a PGA Tour sponsor's exemption into this week's FortinetChampionship.

Herendeen was one of five Illini – including individual competitor Timmy Crawford – to card top-25 individual scores. Junior Jackson Buchanan, the runner-up for the individual title at the 2023 NCAA Championship at Grayhawk last May, finished six shots of Herendeen's pace in a tie for fifth at 217 (+1).

Tyler Goecke and Crawford, also making their Illini debuts as graduate transfers from Wright State and Loyola Chicago, respectively, matched sophomore Ryan Voois with scores of 221 (+5) to finish tied for 21st. Voois was competing in just his sixth collegiate event, and only the second of his career in the Illini's scoring lineup. Senior PiercenHunt tied for 46th in the 72-player field with a 54-hole score of 228 (+12).

Illinois hosts another of the season's most prestigious collegiate events, welcoming 14 peers for the 17th annual OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational at famed Olympia Fields Country Club. Contested on the Par-70, 7,310-yard North Course, the event annually offers a demanding but fair early-season test that attracts one of the best fields in collegiate golf.

Programs in the 2023 tournament field have combined to account for 17 of 24 spots in the NCAA Championship match play finals since the current format began in 2009. In addition to each of the last five national title winners – Florida (2023), Texas (2022), Pepperdine (2021), Stanford (2019), and Oklahoma State (2018) - the Illini also welcome Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Michigan State, North Carolina, and Purdue.

All 15 of the programs in the field competed in the 2023 NCAA Regionals last May, including 11 that advanced to stroke play at the NCAA Championship and seven of the eight squads that closed the season in match play vying for the championship trophy at Grayhawk. The field boasts 14 teams that are ranked or receiving top-25 votes in the first GCAA Coaches Poll of the season.
