Ribeiro Selected as Permanent Head Coach of Fighting Illini Men’s Gymnastics

CHAMPAIGN, IL – One of the most decorated men’s gymnasts in Fighting Illini history, Daniel Ribeiro was named the permanent head coach of the program today by UI Director of Athletics Josh Whitman. The head coaching appointment runs through the 2026-27 season and is subject to approval by the UI Board of Trustees at its January meeting.

“In Daniel Ribeiro, we have identified someone who has committed his adult life to the advancement of Fighting Illini men’s gymnastics,” said Whitman. “Beginning with his time as a student-athlete and continuing through more than a decade on our coaching staff, Daniel has demonstrated a passion for our gymnasts and the Fighting Illini gymnastics tradition. During these last five months, we have seen Daniel step into the head coaching role with a strong vision, confidence, and a willingness to learn. Our team and our alumni have spoken enthusiastically about Daniel’s leadership, and we are excited to partner with him as we usher in this new era of men’s gymnastics at the University of Illinois.”

Ribeiro was named interim head coach this past summer after serving four seasons as assistant coach and seven years as the associate head coach for the Illini, and in November, he promptly signed one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.

“I am extremely humbled and privileged to have been given the opportunity to lead this incredible group of young men,” Ribeiro said. “My passion for Illinois is only exceeded by my love for my athletes and a burning desire to win. I cannot thank Josh Whitman and Sara Burton enough for their mentorship and confidence in me, to not only lead this program, but to bring championship success back to Champaign. My staff and I are committed to developing champions in every single one of our student-athletes that will lead to incredible academic, athletic, and personal growth and success. We will not rest until the National Championship Trophy is back with the Illini Family.”

Ribeiro earned National Assistant Coach of the Year and Central Region Coach of the Year in 2012 after helping lead the Illini to their fourth-consecutive Big Ten title and first national championship since 1989.

In the 11 seasons combined as an assistant and associate head coach, Ribeiro helped oversee a program that produced seven national champions, 70 All-Americans, 18 Big Ten Champions, two Big Ten Gymnasts of the Year, two Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a Nissen-Emery Award winner.

As a member of the Fighting Illini men’s gymnastics team from 2008-11, Ribeiro won two NCAA titles on pommel horse (2009, 2011) and was a three-time captain, starting his sophomore season.

The Chestnut Ridge, New York, native is also a three-time Big Ten pommel horse champion, taking the conference crown in his freshman (2008), junior (2010) and senior (2011) seasons while earning First-Team All-Big Ten accolades in each of those years as well. Ribeiro also captured pommel horse gold at the 2010 U.S. Visa Championships between his junior and senior seasons.

From what I've been told...

Illinois has some optimism that the waiver for another year for QB Tommy DeVito will get approved.

If Tommy does return, they obviously won't bring in another transfer.

NIL is a big part of bringing a guy like DeVito back. Things are progressing pretty nicely along those lines.

Decision to make for RB Chase Brown as well. He has to weight the pros and cons, Illinois would love to have him back, as would donors of course.

There's some NIL opportunities as well for DL Johnny Newton. I think a lot depends on where he's projected to go in the draft, so that decision might take a little time.

DL Keith Randolph isn't as sure of a thing in the Draft as Newton. That's something he'll need to consider.

Devon Witherspoon is very likely headed to the NFL Draft. He's moving up draft boards. Top 3 rounds.

Rankings

As of 12/9...Illinois is
#10 NET
#12 KenPom
#5 Sagarin
#13 T-Rank

Teams that are better than us in all 4 ratings:
Houston
Connecticut
Tennessee
Purdue

Those are clearly the top 4 teams in the country right now. These teams are better than us in 3 rankings:
Indiana

Teams that are better than us in 2 rankings:
Virginia
West Virginia
Texas
UCLA
Gonzaga

Where would I put us right now? I won't argue with the top 4. Indiana is just a shade better than us in terms of resume so I'll give them an edge begrudgingly. Virginia beat us on a neutral court and is undefeated so I have to give them the nod but they are slipping some. West Virginia is overrated so no on them. Gonzaga even more so. We beat Texas and UCLA on neutral courts so we edge both of them as well. So I'd say something like:

1. Houston
2. Connecticut
3. Purdue
4. Tennessee
5. Virginia
6. Indiana
7. Illinois

Right now we're ranked #17 with a neutral win over #2 that hasn't been considered yet. I'd imagine if polls came out right now we'd be around #10.

It still just absolutely blows my mind that you can take a 4 seed, lose all 5 starters and 87.2% of your minutes, and reload with a team playing at a top 10 level a month into the season.

I really thought we'd be looking like an NIT team until January and then make a dark horse run in the NCAAs as a 7 seed or something. Instead we are looking at likely a third straight season as a protected seed. Something is going very right with our basketball program right now.

Question for Indianola

Indianola, great to see your post in the Antwon Hayden thread. Maybe Sanders will finally be the guy who lifts Colorado off the bottom of the P5 football world.

I was going to reply to your post there but realized it's too far off topic so decided to ask here and hope you see this. Occassionally I wonder where Illinois athletics would be today if Craig Tiley had been hired instead of Mike Thomas as AD. I certainly don't know if Illinois asked Tiley and if they did, if there was any hope he could have been persuaded to come back the Champaign-Urbana. What I do know, anecdotally, is he was the coach on staff that the others such as Turner, Weber, and maybe even Self looked to for guidance and wisdom. I imagine he had a good relationship with Henson in his final years, too.

So why this post? I'm convinced you're the one person here who can respond with anything more than a wild guess on whether Tiley was approached and where we'd be today if he was named AD. Thanks!
