Illinois up to #22 in the AP Top 25

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Illinois football team is ranked #22 in this week's AP Top 25 and #21 in the Coaches Poll. The Fighting Illini are off to a 5-1 start and have been ranked for five consecutive weeks.

Saturday's sold out showdown against #24 Michigan will be the first AP Top 25 ranked vs. ranked game at Memorial Stadium since 2000. It will be the 24th ranked vs. ranked matchup in the history of Memorial Stadium, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary this weekend.

The game against Michigan will take place 100 years and one day after Red Grange's historic performance in the Memorial Stadium Dedication Game. The Dedication Game famously occurred against Michigan on Oct. 18, 1924, when Grange gained national headlines after scoring four touchdowns in the first 12 minutes to take down the previously undefeated Wolverines.

Illinois has announced detailed plans for the Rededication weekend, set for Thursday, Oct. 17-Saturday, Oct. 19. To view the complete schedule of Memorial Stadium Rededication plans, click here.

#22 Illinois and #24 Michigan kick off on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS.

Recruiting news A few notes, possible flips...

Four-star defensive back Dawayne Galloway didn't make the trip to Champaign yesterday. Illinois has backed off of that recruitment.

Instead, they are prioritizing Colorado commit Alex Graham. They have a good connection to Detroit Cass Tech in Corey Parker. They believe they have a great chance to flip him. He will visit for the Michigan game on Saturday.

The Illini offered WMU commit OL JJ Hirdes during his visit on Saturday. I think there's going to be some more Power 4 competition for Hirdes. The offer was big, though. Hirdes is a right tackle prospect. Natural athlete, long arms.

DB Torrie Cox has a brother Tywan Cox at Miami Northwestern who is committed to South Florida. Illinois really likes him. Speedy kid who is an aggressive tackler in the box and a couple of inches taller than Torrie. Offers from Miami, Nebraska, Pitt, Syracuse, UNLV, Vanderbilt, and others.
