At the end of the 2014 season, UAB a 6-6 team received news that the Board, at the time run by Bear Bryant Jr and other Alabama folks had voted to disband UAB football. One board controls both schools and Jr was getting back at UAB because Gene Bartow had reneged on a promise to his father. Even though UAB had its best attendance year and were 6-6, their program was finished.

In 2015 after raising millions in donations UAB announced it would bring back football in 2017. Only a handful of players remained on campus. They recruited a class in 2016 and welcomed a bunch of transfers, including Teko Powell from Illinois. They practiced all last year and even though they did not play a game, they treated every week like game week. They recruited a second class in 2017.

With two recruiting classes and a boatload of transfers, UAB is currently 6-3 and bowl eligible. Coach Clark is a superstar. What he has done at UAB is nothing short of miraculous.
