Scott Studwell to serve as honorary captain vs. Minnesota

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Former Illini linebacker Scott Studwell will serve as the #24 Illinois football team's honorary captain against Minnesota on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on FS1.

As a team captain in 1976, Studwell led the Illini in tackles with 177 on his way to AP All-America Third Team honors. After the season, he was drafted in the ninth round of the 1977 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.

Studwell is the Vikings' all-time leading tackler with 1,981 during his 14-season career (1977-90). He holds team records for single-season tackles with 230 in 1981 and 24 in a game against Detroit in 1985. Studwell led the Vikings in tackles during eight seasons, 1980-85, 1988, and 1989.

Studwell was a two-time Pro Bowler. He was inducted into the Vikings Ring of Honor in 2009 and has enjoyed a long career as an NFL scout.
