The story is now coming out that Josh Whitman was working (at least in his mind) on the Lovie Smith hire BEFORE he even was named Athletic Director. That means that he made more progress as AD before he was officially in place than Guenther's last 4 years, the entire tenure of Mike Thomas, and certainly more than the short tenure of Chris Kowalczk (sp?).
Think about it. Whitman had to identify a connection to Lovie Smith, be introduced to him, get a strong indication of interest from Lovie, work on a list of resources that had never been done before at Illinois, put together a budget for such a move, research the legal and financial aspects of the move, line up the donors, circle back to Lovie to confirm that he was on board and then WAIT.
Because he had to be official AD to make this move.
