OT thread

President Trump has set a goal for DHS and various other Illegal Immigration units to arrest and DEPORT 3,000 a day !

That sounds like a lot, to liberals looking for Article 3 protection under Due Process.
Until they learn that Article 2 is FOR illegal immigrants and it doesn't allow/provide for Due Process !

What is germane is that The US Supreme Court has just granted/ruled that approx 900,000 +
illegals can be rounded up and deported !

So that's close to the 3,000 per day !

OT-the Civil War.

I went to a civil war roundtable for the past 2 years. The speakers mainly were academics who were there to publicize a new book they just wrote about a war that has been covered and covered again for 150 years. However, I did not remember much about the war so it was interesting.

After this experience, there is one thing clear to me: the civil war broke out because of slavery. (Approximately 700.000 soldiers died in this conflict) Once the South seceded, men on both sides seemed honor bound to support their "country", regardless of how they felt about slavery. After the first battle of Bull Run, which was the first major battle, President Lincoln called for 1 million more men to serve for a term of 3 years and they easily recruited them. Frankly, the North had no problem getting men throughout the war. The North had more resources so the South gradually wore down and lost.

The reason the war was about slavery goes back years to tensions between the New England states and the Southern states. If you saw Hamilton and the song about being in the room, the reference was to Hamilton trading the location of the permanent capitol of the country in exchange for support for a national bank. The agricultural South didn't trust the North. Unfortunately the cotton gin was invented and suddenly some in the South could make lots of money from cotton, all they needed were slaves.

History shows political compromises between the North and South over slavery up until 1848 when it all blew up. The territory gained in the Mexican Amerian war was largely slave free and not cotton growing land anyway. Up to that point there were an equal number of no slave stares and slavery allowed states in the county. If a new free state was added, they they needed to add a slave state. This balance was the art of compromise that happened increasingly up until the civil war.

IMO, the South saw the country growing to an unmanageable size and choose to separate to keep their way of life and slavery. They really had no chance to win if the North was willing to lose lots of men and treasure to suppress it, which they did. Initially Lincoln didn't explicitly say the North was fighting to end slavery but did make freeing the slaves part of the public mission by 1863. One reason he may have not done it earlier is there were border states that allowed slavery that didn't secede (plus areas like S Illinois where there were slave owners) so he initially made the war about preserving the Union.

Finally, with my 21st century brain I can not understand slavery. It is evil. I know enough about history that slavery has existed in cultures from Rome to the Ottoman empire. It was a sad part of our history and it took 700,000 soldiers to die to end it. The sad thing is some don't want to leave it in history and still are clamoring for reparations. I guess it is not over if you can get money.

Perfect example of the left. They can watch videos of people doing something, talking about why they are doing it, and they still need someone to tell them what they have watched.

See the Aurora apartment videos for another recent example.

Girls (children) have to stand up for what’s right because some men won’t acknowledge the obvious.

This is so sad. Something so basic, and one of our two political parties can’t acknowledge it. If they would, we could move on from these crazy times.

Just here to work our farms
Probably. I see them with roadblocks pulling over every work truck with brown faces. Lawn, roofing, plumbing stucco etc. Usually the entire front seat is filled with 3-4 brown faces. Sometimes one older white owner or manager. Wait until the owners who all voted for Trump start complaining that they can't continue as they are losing their best workers and they can't replace them.

If your chief concerns regarding this horrendous attack are 1) how the act is labeled and/or 2) who gets blamed politically......you might be a terrible human being.

Worst post of the month. Who beside you says they are targeting brown people, whomever that is. I don't see Latinos as brown if that is who you mean. Latinos are great Americans, not whatever you were trying to say. I have relatives. Maybe avoid stereotypes, it works on liberal Saturday Night Live, but only for liberal audiences.
Reread my post. I think you missed the point. Actually you missed by 180 degrees.

If your farm owner friends are missing workers after these career criminals are convicted/deported, you might need new friends.

Your side acts like all non citizens are the same. Just here to better their lives. Completely disregard the horrible people that came here far too easily.

Not surprising to see you here dismissing a dozen horrific non citizen criminals being arrested. Who cares about the children/women being abused by these men, we should think about the upside of them doing slave labor for us.

I’ll just be pleased if people stop using Molotov cocktails to terrorize people in my state. Been happening for months. Not surprising that someone went after people instead of buildings, this time.

Unfortunately, none of this is surprising to those that have been paying attention.

If only someone had polled Latino Americans

Probably 95% are honest hard working people trying to support their families. Maybe 5% are criminals.

lol. The numbers changed the last few years, when we started allowing in everyone, regardless of our ability to vet them.

95/5 is so hilarious. You throw out a statistic with nothing to back it up. Non citizens are less likely to report crime, so we have no idea what the rate of crime is among non citizens. Anyone who gives a statistic on non citizen crime is giving their biased take. It’s an impossible stat to gather.

Undocumented immigrants far less likely to commit crimes in U.S. than citizens

December 7, 2020 By Chris Barncard
Crime rates among undocumented immigrants are just a fraction of those of their U.S.-born neighbors, according to a first-of-its-kind analysis of Texas arrest and conviction records.
Compared to undocumented immigrants, U.S. citizens were twice as likely to be arrested for violent felonies in Texas from 2012 to 2018, two-and-a-half times more likely to be arrested for felony drug crimes, and over four times more likely to be arrested for felony property crimes, according to a study published by University of Wisconsin–Madison researchers today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Opponents of immigration often argue that immigrants drive up crime rates. But newly released research from Stanford economist Ran Abramitzky and his co-authors finds that hasn’t been the case in America for the last 140 years.

The study reveals that first-generation immigrants have not been more likely to be imprisoned than people born in the United States since 1880.

Today, immigrants are 30 percent less likely to be incarcerated than are U.S.-born individuals who are white, the study finds. And when the analysis is expanded to include Black Americans — whose prison rates are higher than the general population — the likelihood of an immigrant being incarcerated is 60 percent lower than of people born in the United States.

While other research has also debunked claims that immigration leads to more crime, this study of incarceration rates provides the broadest historical look at the relationship between immigration and crime across the country and over time, says author Abramitzky. Abramitzky is the Stanford Federal Credit Union Professor of Economics and senior associate dean of social sciences in the School of Humanities and Sciences, as well as a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR).

The study is detailed in a working paper released by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Using U.S. Census Bureau data, it focuses on immigrants present in the Census regardless of their legal status and on men between the ages of 18 and 40.

You didn’t address the fact that they report crime at a much lower rate than citizens. We have no idea what the crime rate is among non citizens.

70% of undocumented immigrants reported they are less likely to contact authorities if they are a victim of a crime.

I'm sorry if I misinterpreted your post. Anytime I see someone saying the police are targeting "brown" people because of the color of their skin it makes me nuts. The left has a goal of uniting black and brown (and asians but that isn't working) as oppressed peoples needing Dem political leadership. So when you say the police are targeting brown people you are speaking Dem. I know plenty of Latinos and many look whiter than me and possibly you. It is identity politics and if your post about brown workers and white bosses was something different I apologize. However I don't think I was wrong. You said the white bosses are going to miss all the brown workers Trump is going to deport, and then we will have no one to do lawn work, construction, roofing etc. Still the worst post ever.

You might have been caught off guard, but this is pretty standard for stone. He recently told a “story” about the owner of a construction company telling his son that he is the only white boy he knows with a work ethic.

The media is in a bad spot here. Do they admit that they were complicit in covering for the Biden admin, or do they admit that they have zero curiosity and ability to discern things for themselves? Either way, they have no credibility left.
They don’t, but how are the people who take the gaslighting hook line and sinker accounted for?

OK, one more civil war thing, pls ignore if you could care less.

If you have never been to Gettysburg it is well worth visiting.

In Sept 1862 Lee led Confederate troops into Maryland to try to influence the midterm elections. They fought near Antietem creek to a bloody "draw", and Lee retreated back into Virginia. Five days later Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation. Lee thought he learned a lot he could do better so re-invaded the North in June 1863 leading to the battle of Gettysburg in July. (Still trying to influence public opinion in the North.) Gettysburg was a disaster for the Confederates and Lee retreated.

If you go to Gettysburg, stand on Cemetery Ridge and look out over the fields below. Lee sent General Pickett with 12,500 troops, marching 3/4 of a mile across these open fields on day 3 to try to save his campaign, into cannon and gunfire. They were brave but never had a chance.

And that is how most battles in the civil war were fought. The main infantry weapon was a musket (bore loaded) but with a rifled (grooved) barrel, The 1860's version could shoot accurately 300-500 yards vs 50-100 yards for smooth barrels. Despite these technology improvements, the generals for both the South and North still sent troops marching forward to try to overwhelm well defended positions; it usually resulted in a slaughter. You will feel this first hand if you stand on Cementary Ridge. Pickett's charge was a slaughter.

Finally, there are "monuments" all over the Gettysburg battlefield. Turns out it was a thing in America, about 20 years later, for local municipalities to donate money so veterans could go back to Gettysburg and set up stone monuments to honor their unit's participation in the battle. If you go, they are everywhere.

True story. I was on a very private horseback tour of Gettysburg battlefield. Not the one that is advertised all over billboards. Just the guide and 3 of us. She took us all around, but when we got to Cemetery Ridge, we came at it the opposite way you did. We came up the way Pickett’s men did. Those guys had to know they were dead. For me seeing all of Union positions and being on a horse in the Confederate position, it was somewhat of a religious experience to me (for lack of a better phrase). Some of the stories about who fought and family members fighting against each other. I think a young man who had moved to Richmond came back to Gettysburg fighting for the south, where he died on Culp Hill, which was his grandfather’s property.
