At our church this evening, we had a member share some thoughts on the coronavirus outbreak. For background, the church member is a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic specializing in infectious diseases. Some things she mentioned:

1) There's a lot we don't know or are unsure of because much of the current info is from China.
2) The mortality rate appears to be between 1 and 4%.
3) SARS and MERS were/are far more lethal but had very low propagation rates.
4) It's unknown if this new coronavirus has as high a propagation rate as the Spanish flu of 1918 but it's clearly spreading much faster than either SARS or MERS.
5) Despite a low mortality rate, the Spanish flu still killed something like 50 million people.

edit:
6) Symptoms are not like the common cold. Typically it's a high fever with a very dry cough.
