Former Wisconsin safety (2002), and most recently four-year Fresno State S&C coach Joey Boese has been officially hired as the new S&C coach for the Illini. I'm not one to kick a man while he's down, but I for one thought this change was a definite need a while ago. Something just wasn't right about the physical development of a number of players matriculating through the Illinois program over the last several years. Particularly evident was the lack of development in strength and explosiveness by guys who were decent athletes. I was completely taken aback by the lack of strength and/or speed displayed by several good Illini players in their Pro Day testing over the last few years. Simply put, these guys were spending 4-5 years in the program and were not even displaying the strength and explosiveness of many good recruits coming out of high school these days. Boese says his biggest training focus is on speed and explosiveness that translates to the field! I'm looking forward to this transformation of the program. It gets more exciting with every hire for me!
