You really compare Russia, China, nuclear weapons, and 300 members of a Venezuelan gang?
Now it’s 300, haha. Thousands buddy, and it's not just Venezuelans. They just did the most damage early on.

I just don't see it. Suppliers are lowering their cost of goods to keep the business in many cases. Many big box retailers were prepared to(or did) find other alternatives to China after the election. The USA has a more robust economy than most of its trading partners (nearly all except Switzerland and a couple of petro states).
Which is great. But that doesn’t mean we are immune to unnecessary economic pain. That’s the issue. The public is going to lose its mind if this goes where it’s heading right now, shortages and inflation on a bunch of products.
We can debate the economic theory of whether the US could survive longer than China in a trade war if both countries had the same system (the US absolutely could), but we have voters.
What’s even dumber is Canadians being advised to use burner phones if coming to the US. What?I just don't see it. Suppliers are lowering their cost of goods to keep the business in many cases. Many big box retailers were prepared to(or did) find other alternatives to China after the election.
The amount of money wiped out of the stock market is a nothing if it comes back in spades. I have never liked the "do everybody at once" tactic. I also do not like how long it is taking to button up the low hanging fruit. I do believe the Chinese will want a speedy deal. Trump acting like he is not in a hurry is maddening, but definitely part of the negotiation process with China. The Trump admin knows it is on the clock to get past much of this.
The Canadians trying to harm us mostly because of Trump's rhetoric of the 51st state is an unforced error we get from Trump. This was dumb.

Dude ... you realize this is pretty typical news coverage, right? Crime gets an extraordinarily high percentage of local coverage (and on the right, national coverage).
I almost daresay you go back and find a WGN news broadcast from like 1990. It was literally murder, another murder, armed robbery, another murder, and the weather. Classic stuff!

Ya, and I realize all of the drug busts are non citizens being arrested. A little different, right?
I've yet to read a coherent and logical argument for why tariffs will cause major shortages. Is that because there isn't one?Trump's trade war conducted by "Dave" would be a whole lot better than Trump's trade war conducted by Trump. I think you are making the wrong presumptions on why things are taking too long (because the goal - at least initially - was not new deals but instead lower trade deficits).
What I've seen suggests a deal with China will take 2-3 years (that said, the exorbitant rates will come down in the interim, tho it was Trump and not the Chinese that jacked them up to begin with).
Big box retailers actually warned Trump this is likely. Shipping arrivals in the USA are way, way down. And btw, with more scarcity (plus tariffs), prices on a lot of lower end goods are about to rise.

There are plenty of trees to make furniture. They were never in any danger of losing forests. Pine grows rather quickly. It’s the oak and hardwoods that take some time to replace. Nice job circumventing my post to discuss towels, Captain Strawman. NC is a desirable state in which to manufacture heavy vehicles/equipment. Easy access to Atlantic ports. Makes exporting heavy machinery more efficient than the midwest. BTW, Illinois is raising it’s gas tax to 48.3 cents per gallon beginning July 1. It’s an inflation adjuster. Thanks to Biden’s poor management and the inflation his policies created, we will pay more. Also, nutjob politicians are starting to lose money on gas tax, because of more fuel efficient cars and electric vehicles. They are looking to create a per mile tax on vehicles. Your Democrat politicians are brilliant at hurting poor people and keeping them less mobile to find work.Instead of making furniture, and cigarettes, and towels living in poverty the people in N. Car. Are working in high tech, banking and constructing wonderfull communities. Let s buy towels from India and furniture from countries that want to now clear their forests.

So the point isn't that crime is up or needing daily discussion, it's that we let in criminal immigrants.
While I like to look at this on a per capita basis, it's rather clear that the policies with respect to Venezuelan immigrants was an abject disaster.
It was very dumb. What was dumber was Canadians harming themselves by voting in a far leftist moron who will finish what Trudeau started. Was the right-winger going to suck up to Trump, capitulate and make Canada the 51st state? Hardly. He was a Canada First guy. Canadian voters slit their own wrists because of TDS.I just don't see it. Suppliers are lowering their cost of goods to keep the business in many cases. Many big box retailers were prepared to(or did) find other alternatives to China after the election.

And your Colorado government is complicit in the foolishness. It’s up here when it doesn’t need to be. It should be declining like everywhere else, but the Biden/Harris admin sent 10s of thousands of people here with no long term plan.
It looks like it’s more than Venezuela, but there is zero doubt that people from certain parts of the world engage in more dangerous activities than others. We imported all of them.

Nonsense. Tariffs don't equate with embargoes. Any product deficiencies are simply from retailers being scared to order goods they aren't sure they can sell at a higher price. Things people "need" will be there for them to purchase. Things people like to buy because their prices are crazy low might not be. Those who have been in international business know this. Rag writers probably not.Huh?
They will cause shortages and empty shelves because a large number of consumer goods are manufactured in full or in substantial part in China, the current tariff rates are tantamount to an embargo on such goods, the normal flow of goods shipped to the USA are way, way down (see the article I'm linking), and without the goods, there are shortages/empty shelves. Trump actually seemed to understand this when he spoke about his "two doll" limitation btw.
Right now, the port and freight industries in America are petrified. Even worse, the fact that goods aren't going to the USA is actually going to help consumers of the same goods in every other country in the world, who will know have more supply for some period. You're welcome, Italians!
I'm sorry that a GOP President whose junk so many of you slobbered is letting you down. It's only getting worse from here. Enjoy the ride into the toilet. I sure will!

America's busiest ports issue "dire" warning over Trump tariffs

In what world is this caving? China is a totalitarian state that can absorb a lot of pain. The US is a democracy where the party in power got about half the vote.
We have zero shot of winning the absorb pain competition with China. Of course we can negotiate better policies (over time) and work to change certain supply chains in our national interest. We can even engage in some trade-related escalation.
But huge tariffs that amount to an embargo … we are going to fold first. Because we care a lot more about broad based economic success and those who can’t deliver it will be quickly ousted.
I didn't realize you are so soft. Did you say the same thing about the Soviet Union in 1988?
The USA has a more robust economy than most of its trading partners (nearly all except Switzerland and a couple of petro states).

Give it up already, it got old 6 months ago.
I don't think it will happen either because China is caving - I'm surprised they didn't last longer than 34 days to be honest.I was 9, TJ. And economic growth - not economic pain - was a big part of how the USA won the Cold War (the other part was an aggressive military posture, which I'm all for, it's the Vance wing of MAGA that dislikes this).
If you told me that winning a trade war was going to end the Chinese regime, I'd probably sign up for a rough two years economically. I don't think that's what we'll get tho.
There are plenty of trees to make furniture. They were never in any danger of losing forests. Pine grows rather quickly. It’s the oak and hardwoods that take some time to replace.
So, you and Jeff wanted tariffs against China when you believe the US will lose that battle. That is odd! I guess we don't hold many cards with China IYO.
The rest of the world also will suffer first and that's why they will make deals. Canada talked big but Carney kissed the ring yesterday.
Shortsighted vision such as yours on this topic is surprising. Do you not see the potential realignment? Japan, South Korea, India, and Vietnam all have a chance to make great, early deals which benefit them and put a stick in the side of the behemoth which seeks to dominate the Pacific. Apple is set to move iphone production for model year 2026 to India.
I don't think it will happen either because China is caving - I'm surprised they didn't last longer than 34 days to be honest.
China's citizens are far more advanced than they were in the early 80s. Communication, albeit monitored, is easy so any pain being experienced is known countrywide. The Chinese have also seen the world and freedom. They may not have voters, but they can have uprisings and those never end well.
What shortages are you worried about precisely? China can hurt the US with pharmaceuticals, electronics, and rare earths. The US can hurt them with energy & food. At the end of the day, China needs the massive trade imbalance that the US market delivers.
Oil was $72 / barrel on election day. Today it is $58. That's a 20 percent drop and the impact cascades across the economy. It also happened because of a pro-energy president who was able to get OPEC to increase output. Gulf of Arabia incoming.
And newsflash, the US economy is growing in the right place. Jobs - higher than expected. Government spending - down. That jobs report likely prompted the Chinese to come to the table. Like you, they want the American people to suffer It isn't happening except for those with the TDS gene.
And how many more people died from these drugs in the last 6 months? 50,000? Was your "Maryland Man" trafficking future drug dealers?
Audit every NGO receiving US funds !
Gas prices today 05/07 at big box gas station; $ 2.599 for 85 Octane ! W of WP !First, in many respects I hope you are right. I could quibble with why oil is down (mostly economic uncertainty), but agree with you that some of the GDP report was encouraging (more emphasis on the private sector), which is why I didn't spend time waiving around the slightly negative growth rate (also Q1s tend to be a little squirrelly). Long-term I also like Trump's energy policies.
As I said, from the perspective of who would win a trade war without political considerations, I agree with your conclusion. The fact that the US economy has a GDP per capita of 4-5x China is also a big deal, and the richer you are, the more pain you can absorb.
As for shortages, a number of industries see them coming, because they know what's not coming to US shores right now.
"The Free Press" is a small town newspaper in Tupper Lake, NY for the past 100 years ! TL has a town population of under 4,000 people !It’s from one of her site’s articles. I doubt she believes it. She’s promoting a piece on The Free Press (which I’ve read).
What country are some of you living in? North Carolina absolutely sucked 50 years ago, now it’s a great place to live and work.
The reason we are discussing this isn’t because Americans have lost out due to globalization. It’s because former Dems who now vote Trump who lost because of globalization have a large amount of political power in a closely divided country when they are concentrated in a handful of key swing states.
That’s not going to always be the case. It may not be the case quite soon, in fact. We will see.
Sold a lot of 51 hats !I just don't see it. Suppliers are lowering their cost of goods to keep the business in many cases. Many big box retailers were prepared to(or did) find other alternatives to China after the election.

All NGO's (and even GOs) receiving state, federal, local government grants have auditing requirements placed upon them by the grants, so that internal and outside auditors report, which are then forwarded to funding source, which also independently audit.Audit every NGO receiving US funds !

We have no idea who was in the vehicle and who those people were in debt to for their transportation.I doubt Garcia's haul was drug traffickers, sounds more likely to be construction workers. But that's irrelevant to the point we can agree on, drug OD deaths are plummeting under Trump. They are down to just over 80K in the last recorded 12 months (from a peak of 110K ish in September 2023 (the last reported month is November 2024, so the trend indicates we are likely well below the 80K pace today).
Obviously I don't think this has much to do with Trump, unless the junkies just want to stay alive to enjoy his greatness! Or Biden when it started. But it's great news. And Trump's border policy and emphasis on fentanyl will further assist in the reduction effort.
