Interesting comment considering how bad the policies are in California that actually created the Palisades disaster.

I've acknowledged the terrible policies in California and how that has impacted the disaster. I'm worried about us continuing to feed the incompetence, instead of giving reasonable direction in terms of the rebuild.

I'm not saying people can't rebuild. I'm saying the state has to allow luxury insurance carriers to assess the risk and price it accordingly. And if people choose to not insure at those high costs, they will have to live somewhere else, or take on the entire risk. No more bailouts in uninsurable areas.

As they get better at managing the risk, and maybe some people move out, the insurance carriers will come back to the area.

The pulling out of Callie is their CORRECT reading of the DIRECT ACTIONS of the politicians to ignore the risks in failing to correct or improve the fire fighting in Callie.

What have the politicians done to reduce risk ? NOTHING !

You would be correct in saying that the ENTIRE State has increased risks !

I just want people to think big picture. We are 1 disaster away from similar issues in other parts of the country.

There are many reasons why Trump is talking about Greenland. A huge one is the amount of freshwater and natural resources. I'm glad he is looking at managing Southern California in a better way. I hope they are looking at other areas where insurance carriers are pulling out and making sure we are best prepared in those areas.

I think DeSantis has done a wonderful job in Florida. I've been a big supporter of him, and that is a big reason why. We need more DeSantis in this country, less Newsom. Hopefully this is a wakeup call.

I hope you are right, but I have my doubts. I want the govt to intervene where they should, and get better, instead of repeatedly doing the things they have done. I hope you are right about the future candidates of California, but again, have serious doubts.

I hope what I put there as a solution happens. It may or may not. What we can't do is react emotionally just because something happened. That's how you get Patriot Act after 9/11, which allowed the gubmint to spy on people much more easily. The government has become so overbearing I can't even withdraw $10K in cash from the bank without it being documented what I plan on doing with my own damn money. It's ridiculous. I( have no issue after a major incident like this that the Federal government dictates significantly stronger building codes. It may be more expensive for the families to rebuild and thus result in smaller dwellings, but it was their choice to live there. Never give that right away. Must have a water reservoir at each home (swimming pool sized to home and filled 100% during the dry/Santa Ana wind season), must have much better fire-proof/fire-retardant materials, small brush and underbrush kept to a minimum. Also, one thing I missed was the power company. They are culpable in many cases. It has been documented they do not trim the trees/underbrush back far enough. When the lines spark, it's too easy.

The insurance carriers will not come back until California changes its policies. They essentially made it impossible for the companies to make a profit, which is why they pulled out of the area. Non-friendly business policies. It doesn't just get Tesla to move out of state. It gets people in your state killed and others in the poor house and dependent on Fed government aid to move forward.

BTW @rillaman ...I was recently in northwest Florida looking at homes on the beach, whether on the Gulf of America or the inter-coastal. The newer construction on the beaches were quite sturdy. I looked at a few on Stilts on the intercoastal, that while they met current standards, they were built inside very cheaply. Essentially designed as VRBO party houses. Just like the inner cities need to be rebuilt, perhaps it's time to look at all of the houses on the coast that are past a certain age and somehow offer incentives to demolish and rebuild something much better built to handle hurricane force winds/projectiles and most storm surges. There are of course acts of Mother Nature that cannot be planned for. That's an idea I throw out there that may be a lot cheaper than always going in after a disaster and everything is wiped out.

Different parts of Florida have different risks too. Those risks should always be discussed when planning.

Calif and most municipalities have balanced budget requirements. If a State prioritizes spending like California does, there is not much money for needed things like fire management/prevention -- they just hope it doesn't happen. Cynically I think the politicians like an endangered species excuse or any other environmental reason to not address the fire risk. There are numerous examples being brought up of these excuses now that a disaster happened.

The people living in Pacific Palisades are largely white and largely older (you gotta have money and/or inherited the house). After this disaster some will change their votes but the big voting blocks are elsewhere.

Hispanic, black, and poorer white voters are in the flat area of LA and much more numerous. I'm sure they are saddened by this disaster but they likely don't want Calif to cut social programs to fund fire prevention.

So will Calif ever address prevention of wild fires? I don't think it will be done meaningfully and apparently the insurers agree. The one wild card that could come along that helps is technology. If they can spot fires early and put them out before they "explode" it would make things more manageable. There are videos of a fire on New Year's eve in the Palisades that the Fire Department got to and put out. A week later there are videos of a fire in the same area except the wind was much stronger and it got out of control before it could be contained - 99% cartain this is where this fire started. Lots of talk about fire drones and ways to spot fires early via satellite. Sounds like they need Elon Musk to invent something.

The people, and fire experts, are still saying they have never had Santa Ana winds like last week. So what is your point? There might have been a gust of wind on a mountain over 100 miles per hour? DUH!

You are wrong no matter how many times you repeat the garbage you see/hear on RW media. They have NEVER had hurricane force Santa Ana winds. Santa Ana does not = hurricane force winds. Weeds or brush were heavy as they had record rainfalls, and then drought, not a drop, since June. Listen to experts, not FOX and Friends or Watters, pin heads. RW media read "BOMBSHELL" reservoir dry for repairs. Fire experts said it would have helped a little, but inconsequential. A bigger limitation was the 30" diameter pipe feeding the water supply which would not have handled the reservoir even if full.
