The hospital lobby and insurance lobby basically have the laws written to have monopolies. Deregulation is needed badly to benefit everyone.
The whole system is broken and needs a major overhaul:
- Medial insurance costs are skyrocketing for companies. I know that the company I worked for was paying almost double the cost within a span of 5 years with decent experience.
- United Healthcare is denying claims at a rate of 33% for policies purchased on the exchange.
- You have maximum out of pockets for individuals that are approaching $10,000 and $20,000 for families.
- Most doctors now work for hospitals so patients no longer have independent advocates.
- Compared to other developed countries, the US spends more on healthcare than any other country with worse outcomes by most measures.
I really don't want a single payer system but the current system is broken and is only getting worse over time.
Hospitals and insurance companies are the biggest drivers of increased costs. Hospitals have gotten way too powerful.
I don’t think we have a shortage of intelligence here in America. I do think we have a shortage of motivation, and we focus on things that don’t matter, while disregarding things that matter a lot. We need to refocus in this country.

That is probably true. Another solution is more government regulation to decrease vertical integration and doctor practice size. In Chicagoland, doctors for the most part either work for hospitals or mega-practices. My wife and I both recently had doctors join a very large local practice and the change in care was very noticeable in a negative way.
Doctors are forced to do this due to the way the laws are written and have no choice. All this does is squash competition and these mega health care systems and their massive lobbies control everything (often under the guise of non for profit designations). Massive deregulation is needed. As far as health care outcomes, you are not even close to an apples to apples comparison. The Canadian health care system is for example absolutely horrific but lauded as better because they use different metrics and have a much different patient population.
Virtually no one goes from the US to Canada for healthcare. Many go the opposite direction for it. A coworker in Ontario years ago had to wait a few months to get an appointment with her PCP.
ACA intentionally made things worse for almost everyone, in order to make things better for a smaller % of people.
The more govt involvement (single payer), the worse it will get. I’d rather appeal though a private insurer than Medicare.

I have heard some catastrophic stories in the last 3 weeks, one from a co worker whose mom won’t get to see an ophthalmologist for weeks after a torn retina. Here’s a couple on twitter
I would expect Canada to be bad; they spend a little more than half that the US does per capita for healthcare. I don’t really care about the Canadian healthcare system. I just know that the US system needs to be fixed.
Don't let the trial lawyers off the hook. I remember 10 years ago doctors closing private practice because of liability insurance costs being unaffordable. It is not surprising that younger doctors aren't staying independent.
Hospitals and doctors have a list price that they bill but rarely get paid that amount. It is a big game required to navigate the insurance and medicare/medicaid billing process. However, hospitals around here are always building new wings and facilities so they must be making money, and I think at times it is alot of money.

Healthcare is much like other aspects of society. We lowered standards to let more people in. ACA isn’t really insurance. Companies can’t assess risk when giving out coverage. This obviously led to worse coverage for more people.
Military standards are lower. Police, fire, etc. have lowered standards. Colleges lowered standards to become more diverse. Felonies were reduced to misdemeanors and misdemeanors don’t quality as crime anymore.
Yes, I think we need to increase our standards in this country. Yes, I think we embrace mediocrity.

The new year 2025 will unfold in ways no one can predict. The USA is in for big changes, and much of the rest of the world is chaotic and dangerous. This is not a time to be immersed with gadgets.

American voters made the right decision rejecting Kamala Harris and the progressive movement. Far-left governance in California, New York, Chicago, and other places is horrifying. These progressive loons are flat-out dangerous. Just the Biden/Harris open border alone is a vivid catastrophe that will haunt this country for years.
As for you who are reading this message right now - be cautious this year. It will take time to define the new Trump administration and how it will affect your life. Invest cautiously, spend moderately, be alert in public. The Biden term caused a tremendous amount of social damage. Protect yourself and your family foremost.
