Can anyone help with this. I frequent a blog of Illinois government and political types, and one commenter there, perhaps at UIUC professor, made this comment about the Lovie Smith hire and the claim that UIUC athletics are entirely self-funding:
I believe this is incorrect, and I'd love to rebut this assertion, but I don't know for a fact how student fees may or may not be used for funding DIA programs. Anyone know the answer to this.
Please stop saying that the athletic department pays for itself. Students have to pay $280 per year in mandatory fees to the athletic department — all 42,000 students. If that makes the athletic department self supporting, then so is our government.
