How’s Brad Underwood doing? Grade him A-F.

1. Recruiting. It’s the lifeblood of the program and 50% of the job or more.

2. Get players to execute in games what they’re coached to do in practice. It’s the hardest thing to do as a coach in any sport.

3. Get players to play hard. The ability to motivate is a coveted skill in sports. It’s elusive for most. The best coaches push the right buttons.

4. Manage the minutes. Are the right guys playing the right amount of time? Are the right combinations on the floor?

5. Put players in a position to succeeed. Is Underwood asking kids to do things they’re capable of doing?

6. Make sound in-game decisions. Is he showing good judgement when the pressure is on? You have to do a lot of situational stuff in practice to be ready to get this right.

7. Program management. It entails many things. Academics. Discipline. Marketing. Roster management. Is he a good boss to his assistants? Are players taking care of business off the court? How’s the Illinois brand?
