I would like to see the Illini pursue and offer Payton Thorne. I might be bias since I coach at the Sophomore level at Naperville Central, but this kid is a son of a coach, has a strong arm, is competitive as they get, and is very poised for age. Plus he's a good athlete. He definitely needs to get stronger, and bulk up, and he will. It also wouldn't hurt Lovie to get in good with teams in the burbs of Chicago either, and Thorne will have had 3 yrs experience playing in class 8A varsity football. Plus the head coach of Naperville Central is an Illini alum.
I could see Thorne following in the footsteps of another Chicago suburbanite, aka, Kurt Kittner (Schaumburg High School) when it's all said & done. IMO, Thorne is a better athlete / QB than Kittner was after his Jr year in HS. Thoughts?
