This has to be a big story, particularly since Whitman is a Varsity I member. For too long there have been murmurings that each new coaching regime (even Zook to an extent) did not take care of the Varsity I members. This seems to show up in pro players like Vontae Davis and Kevin Hardy not acknowledging that they are alumni of Illinois. What little I know of Martin O'Donnell is that he may not be able to talk because he has been biting his tongue for at least 4 years.
If Vontae Davis was in a box in Indy with Whitman, that seems like a HUGE change of direction. Also, not to be discounted is the Whitman Turner connection which allowed this deal to come together so quickly and seamlessly.
Any chance we can get an in depth article on the reaction of the Varsity I to Lovie Smith? As an extra bonus, could they tell us what they thought of Beckman?
