So I broke down and renewed my KenPom subscription. Here's how our defense breaks down.
Overall: #166
Effective FG%: #309
Turnover %: #127
Off. Reb. %: #78
FTA/FGA: #23
So we aren't fouling. We do a decent job on the defensive glass. We could force more turnovers, but that's not killing us. Turns out we just simply aren't making the other guys miss shots. It's like we're not even there before the ball goes up.
3PT%: #317
2PT%: #266
FT%: #282
Block%: #306
Steal%: #236
Thinking about this a little bit, it means we aren't stopping opposing guards at all. I think we do a good job with opposing bigs because we rebound pretty well on defense and our opponent FT% is really high so we must only foul shooters.
I think we can get better on defense for the rest of the year. Here's why:
*Kendrick Nunn missed a ton of time and he has 3 years in the system. His presence should help.
*Tate and Lewis have had health issues too but they should also be rounding into form.
*Coleman-Lands missed a ton of practice time so it's no suprise that he is lost on defense as a freshman. He has played over half of our minutes.
*Aaron Jordan and DJ Williams are also freshman so they should only improve on defense.
*If Mike Thorne comes back we might have a defensive presence in the post (Finke is so thin and Morgan is so slow that it is hard to get much worse). Then we won't have to double or pack it in as much so we won't lose opposing guards.
I know this season seems like an absolute debacle but we're still projected to go 16-15 (8-10). Flip a few of those games and suddenly we're not looking so bad.
I am not giving up! Let's play some defense and win some games.
