University of Wisconsin Provost Sarah Mangelsdorf had a visitor last week.

Barry Alvarez, whose bronze likeness is already standing outside Camp Randall Stadium, has come to view UW enrollment standards as posing a threat to the Badgers’ football future. As athletic director, he has already seen coaches Bret Bielema and Gary Andersen depart with complaints about restrictive admissions policies ... policies toughened since Alvarez was coach.

And unlike his counterpart at Illinois, which also has a policy of declining some clearinghouse-qualified athletes, Alvarez is open and public about it. If the Office of Provost is geared to “foster campus collaborations and broaden academic life,” Alvarez is presenting the case for his department. If successful, that would leave Illinois as the Big Ten’s only public member with noteworthy restrictions.

When is Mike Thomas going to step up and get Phyllis Wise on board to get a level Big Ten playing field for recruiting with Illinois Admissions ?
