I just thought of this finishing off a Friday at work. Setting aside Self's great accomplishment (his inability to lose a B12 title at KU), how has Self fared in the NCAAs at KU versus IL? I don't think a league to league comparison makes much sense, the B12 is just not that good and has been very overrated many seasons. In fact, this has actually led Self's teams at KU to be overseeded, arguably giving them easier tournament paths.

Self at KU (Beginning 2004)

E8, R64, R64, E8, NCAA Titlists, S16, R32, E8, NCAA Runner-Up, S16, R32, and R32.

Self at Illinois (2001-3)

E8, S16, R32

Weber with Self's Players Taking Most Minutes

S16, NCAA Runner-Up, and R32

Are these really that much different. Self averaged a S16 at Illinois (6-3). At KU, he averages a little bit better (26-11), which is 70.2%.

If you throw in the Weber with Self's talent years (at this point, let's cut the bullsh*t about Weber's coaching, Self is at least as good and probably better on that front), Self and his talent were 14-6 at Illinois, which is 70%. Amusingly, I'd guess Self had to cheat less at IL than he does at KU (not that the dude is clean anywhere).

So interestingly enough, Self has really achieved results that are almost no different at KU in the NCAAs as he (and his talent) did at Illinois. Thanks again to RG. A smart AD just doubles the KU offer and lines up a different hot escort every month.

I will give KU this. Where they differentiate from us is that they know how to win. Us, we just hire idiots, and they do dumb things to hinder it.
