With our two most veteran QB's both deciding not to return for Illinois next fall we have 2 things happening here.
#1 is that we need more scholarship quality QB's on the roster. A no brainer, but not as easy to do as it is to type here or there. All 4 ways to add player now need to be utilized till we strike gold.
There are 4 ways to put some people onto the roster; #1; 5th yr transfer, scarce to find and even harder to find when we have no O co-ord and no idea of what kind of QB we need. #2; regular transfer in, nice but also hard to find and doesn't help us for next falls games. #3; JUCO transfer in, we have history on this, but all bad as far as I've been following Illinois. #4; recruit high schooler for 2018 LOI"s and coach 'em up this fall. Yes, here we have ONE qb with a signed LOI and we presume admission and ONE qb with a verbal, but no signed LOI and we presume no admission at this time.
So we MUST HAVE another QB here IN Champain for this fall, even better TWO.
GUARANTEED to be here and admitted to school and getting reps in practice ready for games.
#2; We get 2 more spots for recruits this Feb signing period, which could be good if/when we fill the open coaching spots and get out on the road for 2018 kids.
Story; UNC had 3 QB's on the Varsity roster and 2 on the freshmen team when I was there. We went to play ND and expected to "out quick" them on their National Championship run year. Out starting QB went out in the first quarter with a broken collar bone by Allen Page and our second string QB went out in the second quarter with a sprained ankle by another All American. UNC calls timeout and the last QB on the trip gets fitted with high top cletes and thrown into action. Final UNC 0- ND 34, which wasn't too bad a score for UNC. We played with 2 Varsity QB's the rest of the year.
