The first day of full pads was on Saturday and considering it has been a full week of non-stop work things looked to be moving a little slower today, which was a little odd. Anyway here are my notes from Saturday's practice:
  • Quarterbacks:
    • Brandon Peters' ball just looks crisp with the way that it comes out of his hand cuts through the air. It's always kind of looked that way, but confidence has always kind of been bugaboo. When things are going well, he appears to be that much more confident and it helps him. When he struggles, he really struggles. I think building up confidence now is a big deal.
    • Art Sitkowski's ball looked to float today on a couple of different occasions, which was the first time we have really seen that. He has a big arm and he has good arm strength but he's inaccurate with his ball. He overthrew a couple of targets today, but he's still clearly the number two option at quarterback.
    • Deuce Spann has the physical traits to be a B1G QB, but his mechanics just aren't there. He doesn't really cock the ball back far enough and his motion just looks weird because of it. I think if they were able to get that under control he might be able to stick at QB, but time will only tell on that front.
  • Cornerbacks:
    • Corners spent some time hitting a tackling dummy and taking it to the ground. Nothing of too much note on this front.
    • A couple of media members were talking afterward about how Devon Witherspoon has been going through drills, not at the top of the line. I'm not putting any stock into this because Witherspoon has put together a couple of good seasons of film in his career and that should be enough to keep him in the starting role on a regular basis this season. He's got a lot of raw talent and has made some good plays in his career, he's a good player and he should start opposite Adams.
  • Injury/Non-participants:
    • Jamal Woods left practice to get his left ankle taped back up. He put an ankle brace on and was testing it out while we left. He should be okay.
    • Marquez Beason was seen on a bike, this is was the first time that I have seen him in person this week. I had seen him on the bike on social media earlier in the week.
    • Johnny Newton left practice, but he didn't appear to be limping or anything and he wasn't with a trainer either so I have no idea what that is.
    • Khalan Tolson was practicing with the LBs in the first part of our viewing period, but he was on a bike in the second part of the viewing period. That's likely just a maintenance plan for him as he comes back from the ACL injury.
