Tom Herman comes in and proves he the next big thing. Has one hell of a year. AD doubles his salary, increases pay to assistant coaches, and promises to improve facilities, etc.
Herman won't stay forever (most likely) but the Houston AD knows that if you kill it and hire "the man" - you've got to be willing to pay "the man".
Too bad our old AD who was in the Top 10 Highest Paid ADs didn't possess such insight when it came to Self. Doubling his pay after year one would've made it a lot harder for Kansas to cut a check to make him leave. He still might've left, but he'd have felt differently about Illinois and you never know what might've been...
