Hayes named Third-Team All-Big Ten; Phillips, Roundtree honorable Mention

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Illinois senior kicker Chase McLaughlin was named the Big Ten's Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday on Big Ten Network. In addition, McLaughlin was voted first-team All-Big Ten by the league's coaches and second-team All-Big Ten by the media.

McLaughlin had one of the best seasons in Illinois history:

» Hit 20-of-25 field goals on the season, ranking fourth in UI single-season history in makes (20) and seventh in accuracy (.800).

» Led Big Ten and ninth in FBS in field goals per game (1.67), hitting 20-of-25 in 2018.

» Leads Big Ten and 25th in FBS in points scored (96).

» Tied for FBS lead with nine 40+ field goals made this season this season.

» Second in FBS with four 50+ field goals made this season.

» Owns Illinois single season (4) and career (5) records for most 50+ field goals made.

» Has as many 50+ field goals (4) as the rest of the Big Ten kickers combined (4).

» 54-yard make against WIU was the longest made field goal in the Big Ten and tied for the eighth-longest in FBS this season. It also was the third-longest in Illinois history.

» Hit a 50+ yard field goal in each of the first three games this season, becoming the first player in Illinois history to do so in three consecutive games.

» Illinois career ranks:
1st – 50+ yard field goals (5)
T-1st – 1.000 PAT accuracy (79-of-79)
4th – Field goals made (44)
4th – .746 field goal accuracy (44-of-59)
6th – Points scored (211)

McLaughlin becomes the first Illini to win one of the 11 Big Ten position awards, which were created in 2011 to coincide with the first Big Ten Championship game. He is the first Illini to win a major Big Ten award since 2007 when Rashard Mendenhall (Offensive Player of the Year), Arrelious Benn (Freshman of the Year) and Ron Zook (Coach of the Year) all took home major conference honors, and is the first Illini kicker to earn First-Team All-Big Ten honors since Chris White in 1985.

All-Big Ten Honorees
McLaughlin wasn't the only Illini honored on Tuesday. Sophomore punter Blake Hayes was a third-team All-Big Ten selection by the media (HM coaches), while defensive standouts Del'Shawn Phillips and Bobby Roundtree were both honorable mention honorees by the media.

P Blake Hayes (3rd team Media, HM coaches) » Sophomore Aussie led the Big Ten and ranks 23rd in FBS in yards per punt (43.6) among players that met the NCAA minimum, the fifth-best single-season average in Illini history. Hayes placed 21 of 62 kicks inside the 20 with only five touchbacks, and boomed 14 over 50 yards, including a career-long 69 yard boot against Kent State.

LB Del'Shawn Phillips (HM media) » Senior tied for the Illini lead in tackles with 97 (T-8th in B1G) and was second in the Big Ten and 13th in FBS with four interceptions. Phillips also added 6.0 TFLs, 1.5 sacks, three PBUs, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery on the season.

DE Bobby Roundtree (HM media) » Sophomore led FBS in PBUs by a defensive lineman with 7 and ranked seventh in the Big Ten with 7.5 sacks, while also adding a team-high 12.5 TFLs, 66 total tackles, four QB hurries and one forced fumble. In conference games, Roundtree ranked fourth in the B1G in sacks with 6.5.

Only defense and special teams All-Big Ten honorees were announced on Tuesday. Offensive honors will be revealed Wednesday on Big Ten Network.

Big Ten Sportsmanship Award
In addition to the defensive and special teams All-Big Ten awards, senior offensive lineman Nick Allegretti was announced as Illinois' Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree for the second straight year on Monday. In addition to playing nearly every snap over the last three seasons and serving as a team captain for the last two, Allegretti spearheads Illinois community service efforts and serves as the team's Uplifting Athletes chapter president, helping to raise over $88,000 for rare disease research and awareness at the last two Lift for Life events. He is a two-time AFCA Good Works Team preseason watch list honoree, two-time Wuerffel Trophy nominee, 2018 Senior CLASS Award candidate, 2018 Campbell Trophy semifinalist and 2018 Jason Witten Man of the Year Award semifinalist.

Allegretti is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, having already graduated with a degree in accountancy.
