Let's assume both Kofi and Ayo return for the Illini next year and they do in fact reach the Final 4.
How would you compare the 2021 Illini with the 2005 Illini and the 1989 Illini.
Who is the best and why?
My take, I still like the 89 Illini mostly because of total team speed, athleticism, and depth.
2005 and 2021 have some great players but not the incredible depth that the 89 team had.
In terms of depth 89 is first, 05 is second, and 21 would rank 3rd.
After seeing how May from UNC dominated the 05 Illini in the title game, I am not sure how they would handle Kofi.
Could 21 team play great defense on the perimeter and limit the 3 point shooting of the 05 team.
I actually think so but.....
So if we did a 3 team playoff, I would seed 89 first, 05 second, and 21 third.
But if 21 played 05 I would see an upset by 21 who would advnace and lose a close game to 89 in the final.
