Mike DeBord as offensive coordinator replacing Kevin Johns who was released along with James Patton who served as TE Coach/Recruiting Coordinator.
DeBord most recently spent two years as Butch Jones' OC at Tennessee (thus leading me to believe that Jones will now hire Mark Helfrich as OC). He ran a spread no-huddle offense that features a few RPO's, quick screen/pass game, and a power running game, which is the feature. He also coached for three seasons under Lovie Smith with the Bears from 2010-2012. He was the head coach at Central Michigan for four seasons and spent a couple years as Michigan's OC at the end of Lloyd Carr's regime.
Kevin Johns is extremely close to Garrick McGee from their time together at Northwestern. Patton, who was also released also coached with McGee at Northwestern and coached some pretty solid offensive lines while at Oklahoma from 2006-2012. I'll be curious to see if either of these two are brought on in an off the field role even if it is for the short term (meaning, until they get an on the field job) in the near future. Patton brings recruiting advantages considering he has been the recruiting coordinator and we share a lot of the same targets as Indiana. I'm not sure either one of these coaches' phones will be ringing off the hook with job offers either...not because they aren't good coaches, there just isn't going to be the movement that there typically is this off season. Patton could end up in the NFL, particularly with the Saints as a few coaches on that staff are still connected to his Miami (OH) and Northwestern connections.
