Let us point out some obvious things.

  1. If Illinois wanted to hire Whitman/Michael/Frazier/etc. they would have done it already. This job is a huge career upgrade for any of those guys and they'd be asinine to turn down the job.
  2. Our Board of Trustees is a strange bunch with varying agendas, but I don't think that any of them either (a) want this athletic department to suck as much as it does or (b) are so braindead that they'd just offer Tom Michael the job unless they had no other choice. Most of these people actually do have a brain, and do understand what it will take to fix this, but this fact gets clouded by their own individual agendas far too often.

So clearly they have their sights set on Tiley, who is occupied with the Australian Open until the end of the month (it ends the 31st).

They will probably offer Tiley an asinine amount of money to come to C-U and fix this mess. If they have waited this long to make him a crappy offer, then all they did is waste their own time. If you offer Tiley millions, you'll hopefully get that back (and then some) from boosters excited by the hire. I think they will make him a great offer where he would make at least as much money here as he would with Tennis Australia. He will either take the job or turn it down, and they will go down their list of candidates and offer as much as they deem them to be worth.

They have nothing to lose at this point by waiting a little longer and offering their top candidate a competitive offer.

In 10 days we will probably know exactly what is going to happen, one way or the other.
