He is clearly supporting John Groce and giving him the best chance to succeed. A wishy-washy AD (if he needed to stall and save money for an upcoming coaching change) could have been ambivalent and hinted that Groce was living on borrowed time. He is right beside him taking heat. Nobody is going to give you grief when you bring in Lovie Smith. Making an unpopular move and standing by it shows character.
I can't say I agree with Whitman that Groce is worth supporting. I think he should be fired, and he probably should have been fired a year ago. However, if he is going to be our coach for another year (with a chance for longer) then I want him to have his best shot at landing 2017 recruits and getting respect from the current team.
I did not see this kind of behavior from Mike Thomas and I believe that we have the right man as our AD.
