If you are the AD at the University of Illinois, the first thing you need to do is put a grade on the current program before deciding to make a change. Here is how I would approach that task.

You can break down the success, or lack thereof, IMO of a college BB program on 7 factors, some of which a great coach can influence a lot, and some of which he has less influence: TALENT, SKILL, SCHEME, COMPETE LEVEL, EXECUTION, GAME MANAGEMENT, STAFF.

TALENT: This is recruiting. Completely influenced by coach and staff. 100% responsibility. JG Grade: B-

SKILL: This is what a player does to use his talent to be the best player he can be. Somewhat influenced by the coach and staff through individual instruction and drills but mostly up to the player. 25% responsibility. JG Grade: C

SCHEME: Completely up to the coaching staff. 100% responsibility. Not my expertise but IMO- JG Grade: C

COMPETE LEVEL: This is mostly on each individual player, can't be taught but can be encouraged through motivational techniques. 10% responsibility. JG Grade: B

EXECUTION: My belief is that this is shared equally by the players and coaches. Coaches have to be effective in teaching the schemes, offensive and defensive, and players have to be willing to learn and then execute on the floor. 50% responsibility. JG Grade: D

GAME MANAGEMENT: Total responsibility on coaching staff. Game prep, in-game adjustments, sub patterns, match-ups, half-time adjustments, plays out of TO, end of game situations, etc. 100% responsibility. JG Grade: C-

STAFF: Total responsibility on head coach. 100% responsibility. JG Grade: F

My question: If JG made changes to his staff, would it be enough to influence better grades on SKILL, SCHEME, EXECUTION, and GAME MANAGEMENT? Maybe even TALENT?

I like JG but he has a mid-major staff, IMO, and could save his job and the UIMBBP if he just upgraded his staff. Might be too little, too late though.
