Jihad Ward sat out most of the practice on Thursday, so we knew something wasn't quite right. He will have "minor" surgery and be out 3-4 weeks.
TE Tyler White's status improved. He was in green (no contact) and should be full go in the next day or two. He's been out with a bad case of the flu. Kenny Nelson also in green.
The team practiced today 10:45 - 1:00 pm. Shorts, shoulder pads, and helmets. Fatigue is a factor right now. They have some time off before the 7:00 p.m. scrimmage at Memorial Stadium Saturday. Then a much-needed day off on Sunday.
Other than Ward being out, no changes to the depth chart. DJ Smoot will start at SDE vs. Kent State and Carroll Phillips at LEO. I wouldn't call left guard a position battle right now. Looks like Chris Boles is the guy, Freshman TE Caleb Reams got reps with the 2's. Nice looking receiver.
Wes Lunt has been remarkably accurate the entire camp. I talked to Bill Cubit after practice, and he really likes how Wes is getting rid of the ball quickly. Lunt can help himself as far as staying healthy - get the ball out, don't take sacks.
Ke'Shawn Vaughn had a rough couple of days catching the ball. Several drops. They need to get him on the jugs machine and work on those hands. They want to use him in the passing game, but yanked him for Reggie Corbin once because of a drop.
With Fotu out with a calf strain, Tito Odenigbo and Jamal Milan have been battling for the No. 4 DT spot. I think it will end up being Tito. Milan got his bell rung once and spent time on the sideline on the stationary bike.
Malik Turner was better yesterday evening, then again today. Bill Cubit said he had a heart-to-heart talk with Turner and explained what they need from him. Cubit said young players sometimes don't understand that you can't take plays off.
The secondary was better today too. No long plays over the top. But Lunt doesn't need much of window.
NFL scouts were there from the Bears and Rams.
Things we leaned this week:
1. Wes Lunt is a tremendously accurate passer.
2. The freshman class is very good. Vaughn is an impact RB. Others will play too.
3. Depth on the O-line is still worrisome. No one on the 2nd unit really stepped up.
4. Depth and experience overall a huge factor for this team. Smooth camp, good senior leadership.
5. Mike Phair was a great get for the coaching staff. Everything they do on the DL is fast.
6. Chayce Crouch is much better than in the spring. Now needs consistency throwing the ball.
7. Christian DiLauro is an NFL prospect at tackle.
8. They won't be Wisconsin, but the running game will be better.
9 Carroll Phillips is a freak. Now let's see if he can play football.
10. Speed in the secondary isn't great. Need to recruit more kids with wheels.
