This is two domestic violence issues involving UI student athletes in one week. It follows a third arrest in a night club involving another student athlete on the same team. The NFL has shown us that domestic violence is such a negative issue that they have taken all steps to eliminate it among their employees by imposing severe discipline on any player involved in such an altercation. Combine that with all of the initiatives to heighten awareness of date rape, non-consenusal sex, and domestic violence and you can imagine the reaction of the UI President and Chancellor when they wake up in the morning and see the headline article in the News Gazette is the arrest of a UI basketball player for violence or domestic violence. Even as important as Whitman is to the University and the athletic department, he gets limited attention from the President and Chancellor. Whitman will not want to spend that valuable facetime talking about these issues. Thus, the Chancellor and President will want to avoid the very real possibility that these incidents spark a student movement, or worse, catch the attention of a national audience. Whitman will need to take prompt and decisive action to address this problem before it gets out of hand. I am not sure that there is any way to do that, short of firing Groce.
