When Paul Petrino was hired in 2010, there was excitement because of his time working under Bobby Petrino at Arkansas. But it turned out that Paul wasn't the playcaller his brother was.
Now, we have Garrick McGee, also hired with a lot of fanfare. But looking at his career as a coordinator -- in the past, he was always running someone else's system. First, it was Northwestern's, from 2006-07. Then, he went to Arkansas to join the newly hired Bobby Petrino and run his offense. When Petrino was fired for his personal indiscretions, McGee was hired as the head coach at UAB and fired after two seasons. Bobby Petrino was back at Louisville by then, and made McGee his OC once again.
At Illinois, McGee, for the first time, has the keys to the car. It's his offense to design. And so far, the results have been lacking. He has time to improve, but I am worried that this is Paul Petrino part II, where his prior success was due to running someone else's system, and once given the chance to both design the offense and call plays, he showed that he wasn't up to the task.
