INDIANAPOLIS - Fighting Illini rising senior linebacker Del'Shawn Phillips has been selected by the NCAA as one of 200 student-athletes to attend the 2018 NCAA Career in Sports Forum in Indianapolis, Ind. May 31- June 3.

During his junior season in 2017, Phillips led the Illini in tackles, making 85 stops including 46 solos. His 7.7 tackles per game ranked eighth in the Big Ten. The Highland Park, Mich., native also added 4.0 TFLs, one sack and two pass breakups in his first season at Illinois after transferring from Garden City Community College in Kansas.

The Career in Sports Forum, an annual educational forum hosted by the NCAA, brings together 200 student-athletes annually to learn and explore potential careers in sports, with the primary focus on college athletics.

The unique, four-day forum is designed to assist student-athletes in charting their career paths, as well as provide an opportunity to network and learn from current athletics professionals.

The cutting-edge topics covered by industry experts include: how personal values intersect with career opportunities, how behavioral styles impact individual effectiveness, the key professional and career development information to assist with transition from a student-athlete to a professional, and the role of the college coach or athletics administrator. Participants will network with peers, as well as key decision-makers at the campus, conference and national level of college athletics.

The process starts on campus with nominations by athletics administrators. The student-athlete must not only be of junior or senior standing, but also NCAA eligible and have competed in at least one NCAA sponsored event. Nearly 1,000 candidates completed the application, which are then whittled down to 200 invitees by a selection committee comprised of former forum participants who work at NCAA member schools and conference offices. The selected student athletes will have the expenses of their trip covered courtesy of the NCAA.

Regardless of differences in sport, these student-athletes have been united with the unique opportunity to network with industry experts as well as each other as they begin to look past their collegiate careers and map their future.
