Kliff Kingsbury
The loss to Kansas St. seems to have been the final nail in the coffin for him whether they beat Baylor or not.
It doesn’t help to see what Leach is doing over at WSU, and to see what Chris Beard has quickly done with the basketball program at Tech in such a short period.
He was playing in the CFL only 5 years before being hired on as head coach at Tech. Spent his first two years as a quality control coach at UH, then three years as OC under Sumlin.
Outstanding play caller, outstanding OC, and outstanding QB coach. In over his head as a head coach. Tech and Kingsbury found out pretty quickly there is a lot more to a running a Big 12 program then just coaching offense. Recruiting, S&C program, and hiring the right staff especially on the opposite side of your expertise.
He was also only groomed under one head coach on how to run a program and that was Sumlin.
Compare that to Herman who is only 4 years older but spent 2 seasons as a quality control coach under Mack, and another 15 seasons as an assistant with 7 different programs. Majority of his grooming was done under Urban Meyer including a MNC.
Herman seems light years ahead of Kingsbury in the coaching and program building department and I think a lot of us forget just how young Tom Herman still is (turned 43 this past summer).
If Kingsbury doesn’t jump ship after the Manziel and A&M hype after one year and stays on as OC or even moves on to a better school to continue his coaching grooming who knows what would have happened.
If your Todd Orlando and your one of the top 5 DCs in the country in salary, at arguably the top school in the country... why would you want to leave so soon? Obviously the defense having issues late this year has rubbed a little shine off of him nationally...but I honestly see him as the type to be here at Texas a lot longer then many think.
Kirby Smart held on under Saban for a long time, waited for the perfect job opening, and when he got it he jumped in and didn’t miss a beat because he had so many years of being groomed under Saban.
Dave Aranda is no rush to leave his 2.5 million dollar salary while coaching some of the best athletes in the country on defense at LSU.
Speaking of coaching changes some of the shakeups around the country could see some interesting hires whether that is at head coach, or assistant positions in the Big 12 next year.
Obviously where Kingsbury goes could be interesting. I could see a small Texas school go after him...maybe even Texas St. since he is from New Braunfels. If I were him I would go to a big time school as OC instead of grabbing one of the smaller head coaching jobs. Go under a successful head coach that will show you how to build a program other then Kevin Sumlin.
Gus Malzahn (stupid on Auburn’s part if so) is rumored to be on the chopping block. Former longtime Briles OC Philip Montgomery could be out at Tulsa. Larry Fedora has Texas roots and Big 12 ties. He’s credited by Grundy as pretty much building there offense up there until Holgorsen tweaked and made it more efficient. He should be available.
Speaking of Holgorsen, I know most on here can’t stand the guy but if I’m USC I would go after him. You are seeing what Leach is doing at WSU, and Holgorsen has been prolific on offense at every school he has been at. He pretty much made Sumlin at UH, groomed Kingsbury, made OSU a juggernaut on offense, and now done the same at WVU. He seems to have figured out that you have to play a little defense as well. I think he’s improved tremendously as a head coach.
He’s doing this at WVU in a state that doesn’t produce any athletes at the high school level or play spread offenses like they do in Texas. His culture is one of grad transfers, JUCO players, low budget coaching staff, and 3 star recruits. He would do amazing at USC with those athletes and QBs they get annually.
Bill Snyder’s retirement at KSU opens up another position in the Big 12. Matt Campbell probably gets a look at a bigger school including Ohio St.
The conference might possibly see 4-5 new head coaches next year if Holgorsen or Campbell get looked at by bigger schools. Kansas, KSU, and Tech are pretty much guarenteed.
And if Gary Patterson is reading this I heard he was retiring next week too.
