The AFCA is unanimously supporting adding the 10th on the field assistant to college football. The NCAA should rule on this in April. The debate is on about how teams will effectively utilize this position, some people will probably use it as another position coach. For example, I know Lovie Smith would like to have a CB coach and a safety coach because these positions vary greatly in his defense. Some teams will use it as a special teams coordinator, freeing these guys up from having to also double coaching a position on the offense or defense. For example, Bob Ligashesky coaches our tight ends and is the special teams coordinator, Lovie could hire a tight ends coach and let Ligashesky focus on special teams (much like is done in the NFL). This also can allow for teams to free up offensive/defensive coordinators from having to coach specific positions as well. The main advantage of this for coaches will be in recruiting. This gives schools another body to recruit. If this takes effect immediately for the 2017 season....April and May are going to be busy months for football coaches. You'll see coaches on the move all over the place with 128 jobs opening up.
The AFCA is also endorsing a December early signing period for football, but not the June one that was also proposed. The December signing period makes a lot of sense with the increasing number of kids that are enrolling early.
